To Do: Weekend of September 29th – October 2nd

unnamedI have no idea how October got here so quickly. I am actually wondering if I slept through part of September in a modified Rip Van Winkle.

Since life is rapidly flying by let’s carpe diem this weekend big time.

Tonight, learn to brew your own kombucha with local fermenters Craft Kombucha in the Union Market Test Kitchen. What is kombucha? If you need to ask that you may want to start with one of the many commercial varieties available at local stores. To say it is an acquired taste is an understatement but I am a convert and I say this with full understanding that my first sip um challenging. This trendy yet ancient drink is said to have many healthful properties but those bottled brands are pricey so why not; learn to DIY. Students will leave with a fermentation vessel, starter, and their very own SCOBY. Google it. The class starts at 6pm and costs $50. Register here.

Washington Post Book World editor Ron Charles leads a discussion with poet Terrence Hayes at the Hill Center this evening at 7pm as part of the Life of the Poet Series. Hayes is a recipient of many honors including the National Book Award and a MacArthur Genius grant in 2014. The event is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.

Friday night at the Atlas Performing Arts Center jazz guitarist Oscar Peñas and pianist Frank Carlberg blends the precision of classical music and the energy of jazz with original compositions with Iberian influences for a performance called Puente Aereo. The performance begins at 8pm and tickets are $20- $28. Get your tickets here.

The Hill Center continues its Trouble with Hitchcock series with the classic film The 39 Steps which is the final installment looking at the humorous side of the auteur’s work which has been hosted and curated by local critic Tom Zaniello. The screening is free and begins at 7pm. Register here.

Saturday the Friends of the Northeast Library (7th and Maryland Avenue, NE) will host a used book sale from 10:30 pm to 2 pm in the basement of the library. There will be three rooms full of a wide variety of donated books for sale. The proceeds go to support the staff and programs at the library. 

The annual Dead Man’s Run race takes place at Congressional Cemetery at 6pm. This fun 5K and Kids Fun Run begins in the historic cemetery and then heads out to the Anacostia Trail. Costumes are encouraged and all are welcome to celebrate in the beer tent after the race. Register for the race here.

Furia Flamenca Dance Company returns to the Atlas to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month. Audiences will be seated at cafe tables and will be able to enjoy tapas and drinks along with the performance. Tickets are $20 – $30. Get yours here.

Sunday afternoon celebrate the 5th birthday of the Hill Center and the 150th birthday of the Naval Hospital in which it resides at Family Day. All are welcome to enjoy activities from 2pm to 4pm culminating in a concert by High Plains Jamboree – known as a bluegrass band west of the Mississippi and a country band east of the Mississippi which takes the stage at 4 p.m. Part of the American Roots series, this concert will take place outside on the West Plaza. Bring your blankets or lawn chairs. Concessions will be available for purchase.
