Arts on the Horizon’s Snow Day runs at the Atlas through December 20th for kids ages 2-4

Yesterday we added a second teen to our household so please forgive me if I show baby pictures or offer to tie your shoes.

How shall we distract ourselves from the inevitability of aging this weekend??

Tonight local chef Jonathan Bardzik (who lends his recipes to our Market Meals series) is signing books at Hill’s Kitchen (713 D Street SE) from 6pm to 8pm. You may know him from his cooking demos at Eastern Market so come and pick up a signed copy of Seasons to Taste and maybe knock a few items of your List at the same time.

Mosaic Theater hosts a Pay-What-You-Can preview performance tonight of Marcus Gardley’s The Gospel of Loving-Kindness. An unfortunately timely show it is described as “A hymn-and-hip-hop-tinged elegy, set on the South Side of Chicago in a time of rising gun violence in a cosmopolitan, yet divided city.” Yeah maybe a bit timely. A PWYC ticket can only be purchased in person at the Atlas Box Office or over the phone by calling 202.399.7993 ext. 2. The show runs through January 3rd and you can learn more about it here.

Friday is the opening of Step Afrika’s Annual Magical Musical Holiday Step Show. If you have never seen Step Afrika, the world’s only professional company dedicated to the art and tradition of stepping, you must check them out. They are always fantastic but the Holiday show is just a great time. It’s perfect for all ages but really great that snarky late -elementary middle school crowd. You know those who are post-Nutcracker and very likely post Santa but are not yet admitting it? It’s a fun winter party with performers who are having as much fun as the audience. Tickets are $15-$39.50 and are available here. The show runs through December 22nd.

Saturday Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) represents the Annual Winter Arts Festival and Holiday Sale. There will be performances all day and ceramics will be for sale. The full schedule is available here. All are welcome and the event of free.

Teeny tiny arts patrons are welcome to Arts of the Horizon’s performance of Snow Day. This annual performance held at the Atlas is perfect for those too tiny to enjoy the Nutcracker and Christmas Carol. The non verbal performance enchants these littles and their families with a story a little girl and her elf friend as they enjoy her first snow day. The show runs through December 20th and is best for ages 2-6. Tickets are $9 and are available here.

The Mormons on the Hill are holding an open house from 10am-4pm to show off their newly completed meeting house at 522 7th Street SE. All are invited to stop by for food, holiday crafts, carol sing-alongs (11:30 a.m. – noon and 2:30 – 3 p.m.), building tours (with a scavenger hunt for kids), and to meet and talk with those who will call this new building home. All are welcome! Admission is free.

Sunday you can get your holiday pics taken at Union Market by photographer Emma McAlary. She is teaming up with Salt and Sundry offer  15 minute mini sessions of you and your fam. They can be silly or sweet, it’s up to you. The sessions are $80 and you get 3 high resolution digital photos to do with as you will. Sign up here.

Children’s comedian (that is an actual job) The Great Zucchini performs at The American Legion (224 D St SE) in a performance benefiting Gan Shalom cooperative preschool. The performance begins at 4:30 and tickets are$12. You can purchase here or at the door.

The Hill Center hosts a screening of the film Autism in Love which explores the lives of adults on the autism spectrum. A Q&A session with Lindsey Nebeker and Dave Hamrick, one of the couples featured in the film, and Phil Martin, a DC-based photographer whose portrait project, Autism Actually Speaks, explores the perception of young adults with autism will follow the free screening. The film begins at 4pm and registration is here.
