We have two major holidays happening this weekend. For the non-observant, I am talking about Passover and Easter. These may take up a good part of your free time this weekend. But in addition to the seder and some egg-finding, what else could you do?

Tonight, learn to make tasty seasonal spring soups at the Hill Center. Chef Mark Haskell will teach you how to make Potage Saint Germain (Parisian Green Pea & Mint), Stracciatella, and Smoked Asparagus Soup served with Mushroom + Lobster Flan. The class begins at 7 p.m. and costs $60. Register here.

East City Books welcomes author Mikkel Rosengaard as well as Matthew Davis of the Cheuse International Writing Center for a reading from Mikkel’s debut novel The Invention Of Ana, followed by a discussion and signing. The event is free and begins at 6:30 p.m. but advance registration is always welcome.

Friday, Gallery O/H hosts a reception for artist Elmer Calata’s show, Rustiko Aregua. The pieces in the show are created using clay as well as discarded and found objects in rural Paraguay. The idea behind his work is to create something simple, clean, and naturally pleasing using ordinary materials turning into extraordinary results. His inspiration is often rooted in nature, culture, and human encounters. The reception begins at 7 p.m. and is free.

Saturday, head to the Atlas Performing Arts Center for the American première of Paper Dolls: A Play with Songs presented by Mosaic Theater Company. The play is based the true story behind a 2006 Israeli documentary about five Filipino guest workers in Tel Aviv who care for elderly Orthodox men by day—and headline a drag show by night. The production is s part of the 2018 Voices From a Changing Middle East Festival, developed by the Sundance Institute Theatre Program. The play runs through April 29. Tickets are available here.

You can also check out Scena Theatre’s The Beckett Trio. Our review is here.

The 18th annual Eggstravaganza sponsored by the National Community Church will be held at Lincoln Park between 12 p.m. and 3 p.m. More than just the egg hunt, there will be games, face painting, a DJ and giant bunnies. Learn more here.

The Hill Havurah holds a Community Seder from 5:45 p.m. to 9 p.m. Open to both members and non-members, the meal will be Kosher. The cost for members is $55 ($25 for those under the age of 18) and the mom-member price is $70 ($30 for those under 18.) Register here. (You may have to contact the organizers directly.)

Sunday, skip the crowds and see the legendary cherry blossoms from a new vantage point. Take a self-guided kayak tour of the blossoms, also known as a Petal Paddle. You can book a single or a double kayak for this hour-long tour which leaves from The Wharf. I feel more relaxed already! Book your tour here.

Many of our local churches have an Easter Sunday service with an egg hunt afterward. You may want to check out St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 301 A Street SE, which will have egg hunts after the 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. services; Triumph Church, 215 G Street NE, which will have an egg hunt after their 10:30 a.m. service; or Capitol Hill United Methodist Church, 421 Seward Square SE, which will have “a good ole” Egg Hunt starting at 10 a.m. Bring a basket! Looking for a church? We have a complete guide to Capitol Hill-area places of worship here.

Monday evening brings another installment in the Village Voices lecture series. Perhaps one hundred and fifty years after is long enough to take another look at the presidency of Ulysses S. Grant? Historian Charles Calhoun will discuss his recent book, The Presidency of Ulysses S. Grant, to reassess Grant’s struggles and contributions throughout his administration. The lecture is free and begins at 7pm. For more information call Capitol Hill Village. 202-543-1778 or email Info@capitolhillvillage.org
