Dear me, it is St. Patrick’s day this weekend– on a Saturday, no less. While I will likely stay home undercovers with some soda bread watching The Commitments, don’t let me keep you from sharing in the festivities with all your other Irish friends.

Tonight is another Overbeck Lecture sponsored by the Capitol Hill Restoration Society. Architectural historian Kim Williams will trace the history of Capitol Hill’s alleys and alley structures through successive waves of changing uses, demolition, preservation, and new development. Ms. Williams is a preservation planner for DC’s Historic Preservation Office, Office of Planning. The event begins at 7:30 p.m.  and is free. Advance registration is encouraged. (This lecture may be sold out as of publication time.–MHC)

Friday, you can enjoy some Shakespeare with The Winter’s Tale at the Folger Theatre. One of the more fantastical of his plays, the story also touches on motherhood, loss and forgiveness. Aaron Posner directs. The show runs through April 22nd. Get tickets here.

(P.S.: Vote in the Folger’s Shakespeare Madness bracket here. Make sure you also check out our PATIO MADNESS bracket and vote for your favorite outdoor space!)

Saturday, celebrate St. Patrick’s day in the best way possible. Learn to make pizza at the Hill Center. Chef Mark Haskell will teach you all about pizza and its cousins calzone and pissaladiere. Kids are welcome, if they are attending with an adult. The two and a half hour class begins at 11 a.m. Register here.

Sunday, bring your young folk, or really any folk who who enjoy classical music, to the Atlas Performing Arts Center for Capital City Symphony’s Family Concert: I Like to Move It. The program  explores motion and tempo in music. The program starts with John Adams’ exciting and fast-paced Short Ride in a Fast Machine. The music of local composer Charlie Barnett will take us through land and space with Blue Chevrolet: A Station Wagon Symphony and the world premiere of My Own Personal Rocketship. Performances are at 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. with a pre-show instrument petting zoo beginning a half an hour before the start of each show. Littles can grapple cellos and harps  safely. Kids are always free at CCS concerts. Get your tickets ASAP because these shows sell out.
