To Do: Weekend of November 2nd – 5th

This weekend is my favorite of the year: the end of Daylight Saving Time. I know it is antiquated and pointless in this modern era; but despite all evidence it has outlived its usefulness, I revel in an extra hour on a crisp fall Sunday. While we pay a dear price in the Spring, I feel we can all use that extra hour heading into the busy holiday season. How shall we send out another DST?

Learn some holiday prep at Brunch and Bubbly at the Hill Center on Sunday

Tonight, share or hear a story at the monthly Storytellers Open Mic at the Corner Store, 900 South Carolina Avenue SE. The first ten people to sign up at 6:45 will be able to perform their seven minute (or shorter) long story around the theme of The Kindness of Strangers (Or) the Cruelty of Friends. A $10 donation (or a $15 one, which includes refreshments) is requested.

Friday, one of my favorite food bloggers, Deb Perelman of Smitten Kitchen, visits the Politics and Prose pop up inside Union Market, 1309 5th Street NE, to sign her latest cookbook, Smitten Kitchen Every Day. Perelman has managed to become a huge success in a very crowded field. Her down-to-earth voice and no-fail recipes have been attracting readers for over ten years. Full disclosure, I am crazy. I baked a three-tier wedding cake for my sister’s wedding seven years ago using her wedding cake recipe and tips and it remains one of my greatest achievements. Signing is from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m.

Saturday, you can be among the first people in DC to ever to see Vicuna – An American Epilogue. This is a new play by Jon Robin Baitz and directed by Robert Egan for the Mosaic Theatre Company of DC, in its world premiere production at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H Street NE. Vicuna is the story of an Iranian tailor who has been asked to make a suit of vicuna wool for a real estate tycoon who happens to be running for president. The play debuted during the 2016 election. This newly-compressed version is followed by a world premiere epilogue drawn from the playwright’s own headline-making experience as victim of an assault in DC on the night of the inauguration at the hands of a Trump supporter. This timely satire runs through December 3. Learn more here.

The DC Beer Festival returns to Nationals Park. Craft breweries will be on hand and will feature fall seasonal beers. Expect lawn games, DJs, and more throughout the park. Admission includes unlimited tastings, with food sold separately from a number of food trucks. Tickets are $45 and you can go EITHER from 2 p.m. – 3 p.m. OR 5 p.m. – 8 p.m. Learn more here.

Sunday, get prepped for your Friendsgiving or the actual holiday at the Hill Center’s Brunch with Bubbly: Holiday Casseroles and Comfort Food. Chef Jennifer Jones will teach you how to prepare and freeze casseroles to stow away for the upcoming crazy. The class is from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and costs $65 which includes beer and wine. Learn more here.
