To Do: Weekend of July 6th- 9th

Actress Claudia Baumgarten portrays writer Dorothy Parker in Wit and Wrath: The Life and Times of Dorothy Parker st the Capital Fringe festival

Is your part of the Hill as quiet as mine is? I mean, I hate that I have been stuck in town but I always enjoy this feeling of having the place to ourselves…

So before the kids come home from Grandma’s, what are we doing?

Tonight, John Sax Williams and his band perform jazz, R&B, gospel and rock at a free concert at the Arboretum. The gates open at 6 and the show begins at 7 p.m. Picnics are welcome but dogs and booze are not. Use the R Street entrance.

You know you want to impress the rest of the guests at the next wedding/bat mitzvah by scorching the dance floor with your flawless rendition of the “All the Single Ladies” choreography. Yes! We can now all learn to dance like Beyoncé. Tonight begins a four-week free drop-in dance class series at Yards Park offering to share some of the glory of Queen Bey with we, the unwashed masses. Learn more here.

Friday at 6pm at CHAW is another installment of Working from the Figure. This is an adults-only, uninstructed, monitored, 3-hour walk-in, drawing session. It is highly suggested that those who attend have at least some basic or prior drawing experience from the life model. Participants are encouraged to help each other and advise, as well as bring snacks or refreshments to share. Easels, tray tables, and drawing boards are available on a first-come, first-served basis for a $15 drop-in fee. Call (202) 547-6839 for more information.

Coming to America is this month’s Union Market Drive In feature. Remember! It has Eddie Murphy as an African prince who comes to the US to find a wife…in Queens. Sigh, those were simpler times. $10 per car, free for those on feet. Get your ticket in advance here.

Saturday, head over to northeast to check out the offerings for this year’s Capital Fringe Festival. Featuring imaginary lectures by Bill Clinton about Thomas Jefferson, Dorothy Parkey dishing about the other round table members over drinks, and a totally made-up bio of Margaret Thatcher and many many more performances all over the Atlas District. Get a handle of the offerings here and plan accordingly. Be sure to stop by the Fringe headquarters own bar.

Sunday, the Braves play our Nats at home. Bring a little kid and have them run the bases after the game!
