To Do: Weekend of May 25th – May 28th

Gina Can performs as part of the Hello Taiwan 2017 tonight at the Hill Center

Memorial Day Weekend is upon us. Are you leaving town? My whole body physically craves some sand, sun and sea but I don’t know if that will happen for this lady. If you are stuck here with me let’s make the most of it, shall we?

Tonight, the pop-up women’s wear shop Femme Fatale hosts Miss Radbod’s Burlesque Birthday. For $20, guests will enjoy an open bar, snacks, and burlesque performances. From the Eventbrite page: “Dress Code: Less is more. Come classy & sassy, ready for a good time. What happens inside, stays there ;)” You go, Miss Radbod. Get your tickets here.

The global music concert series Dounouya continues at the Hill Center this evening with the Sounds of Taiwan. Golden Melody Award-winning musicians Biung and Sean Huang, as well as Gina Can, are performing in the U.S. as part of the Hello Taiwan 2017 tour! Hello Taiwan is an annual event bringing leading artists from Taiwan to the US to reach American audiences.

Friday kicks off the Friday Night Concert series at Yards Park. Jimi Smooth and Hittime begin performing at 6:30 and wrap up at 8:30 p.m. The concerts are free and all are welcome to bring picnic fare but not booze. Alcohol will be available for purchase in certain areas but leave the box of chablis at home.

Saturday, check out Mosaic Theater Company in DC’s production of Ulysses on Bottles at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. (You can read Maria’s review here.) The play is Gilad Evron’s examination of lives in conflict in upper middle class Israel and destitute Gaza. The play tells the story of unlikely companions who meet in prison: an Israeli-Arab literature teacher and a successful Israeli- Jewish attorney who takes on his case pro bono. Tickets are $9-60 and are available here. The production is a part of Mosaic’s Voices From a Changing Middle East Series.

Sunday, brush up on all things barbecue at Sloppy Mama’s Que-niversity at Union Market. From 1 to 4 p.m., all are welcome to watch and learn from the experts. You can enhance the experience by purchasing a package which will include instruction on building a fire, some take home smoked meats and beers from 3 Stars Brewing. You can purchase packages here.

Happy beginning of summer, everyone!
