To Do: Weekend of March 9th – 12th

Bluegrass group FY 5 performs tonight at the Hill Center.

You guys: It may actually snow this weekend, just when we had finally given up all hope and moved on from harboring any expectations that Old Man Winter would change his ways and show up and things would be the way they used to be. We stuffed our hygge dreams and learned to live with weird winter/springs and would never bother switching out the wardrobe again. But this? This post flower-budding tease is just cruel. How can you string us along Old Man? We were just beginning to move on.

How will we keep our minds off this guy we know is just not that into us?

Tonight at the Hill Center, the roots music band FY 5 performs as part of the American Roots Concert Series. This Colorado based group works within the framework of bluegrass and honky-tonk but retains a 21st Century focus. The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. and tickets are $15. Buy yours here.

Friday night, ART night at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is Working from the Figure. This adults only walk-in drawing session is open to all levels of artists. All are welcome to bring snacks and drinks. The session runs from 6:30-9:30 and costs $15. Easels, tables and drawing boards are available on a first-come, first-served basis. Call (202) 547-6839 for more information.

Saturday morning is the monthly book sale at the Southeast Library ( 403 7th St. SE) 10am to 3pm. Most books are $1 each and coffee table books run a hefty $2.

That evening, the Atlas Performing Arts Center presents Orquesta el Macabeo, a salsa orchestra specializing in dance-worthy music. The concert begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20-$32 and are available here. Stay for the after-party for drink specials and CD signing.

Sunday afternoon, the resident orchestra of the Atlas, the Capital City Symphony, present its annual concert highlighting young musicians, Great Masters, Young Stars. This year’s winner is Lynne Bai, 2016 winner of the Ylda Novik Memorial Concerto Competition for Pianists. She will join the orchestra for Edvard Grieg’s only piano concerto.
