To Do: Weekend of July 7th – 15th

Actress Vivica Fox appears at the Atlas Performing Arts Center Friday

You guys, it’s All-Star Weekend! This entire column could easily be all All-Star. There are free and ticketed events all weekend to celebrate all things baseball. Since much of the fun is happening in Ward 6, Councilmember Allen’s office (where I work) has compiled ALL the activities in one spot so you can start your All-Star planning now.  But what else is happening this weekend you ask? Well…

Tonight, Mark Meadow, a jazz pianist, composer, vocalist, and jazz educator, will perform in the Meadow at the Arboretum at 7 p.m. With his band the Movement the concert will feature jazz, R&B and some gospel. The show is free, but register in advance here. Bring chairs and blankets but leave dogs and booze at home.

You might still have time to book a spot in Garrison’s “Learn to Love Your CSA” pig roast dinner featuring produce from its farm partner One Acre Farm and brews from Manor Hill Brewing Company. Tickets are $95 and the dinner begins at 7 p.m.

Do you have a story about Moonlight? Or maybe you’d like to listen to someone else’s? The Corner Store hosts an Open Mic storytelling night on the topic of Moonlight. Sign up begins at 6:45 p.m. The show starts at 7 p.m.

Friday at 10 a.m., you can finally buy BB cream, CC cream, toner, moisturizer, cleansers, hair balm, fragrance and lip plumper, all in one metro-accessible spot. I’m referring to the Sephora which will open up at the corner of 7th and Pennsylvania SE. I understand not everyone is down with a national retail chain taking such a prominent spot and I sympathize. But I have to be honest: I love Sephora and I am thinking of upping my eye shadow game overcoming a lifetime of regret after some stupendously terrible experiments with powder blue lids in 1984. You can shame me in the comments section. [Ed. Note: Pics or it didn’t happen]

Actress Vivica A. Fox, whom you might know from films like Independence Day, Kill Bill and Set it Off as well as many television roles, is presenting a one-woman show based on her memoir, Every Day I’m Hustling, at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Expect some great behind-the-scenes stories of moments that have influenced her life and career. Tickets are $28 or $37 if you want a copy of her book.

Arena Stage premieres a new musical based on the Kevin Kline move Dave, about a high school teacher who looks like the president and is hired as his stand-in.  Did you miss seeing Dear Evan Hanson or Next to Normal during their DC runs before they became Broadway hits? Me too. I’ve decided to not let that happen again. Dave runs through August 19th so you have some time.

The annual ice cream fest known as DC Scoop has changed its format and is taking place on a Friday night rather than a  Saturday afternoon. Everyone gets a free scoop of ice cream and is welcome to add toppings from a toppings bar. Local vendors will have ice specials to enjoy and there will be music and games. What a fun way to start the weekend!

The local dental practice run by Dr. Nishan Halim celebrates 5 years on the Hill with a party and an art show curated by the Capitol Hill Art League. All are welcome to stop by the office at 27 6th Street SE for some refreshments and merriment. The fun begins at 5 p.m. RSVP here.

Saturday, the Library of Congress hosts a Baseball American Family Day in the Great Hall of the Jefferson building.  Activities include a vintage baseball clinic, a play about African American players, and a bat-making demo. The event is free and you can learn more here.

Capital Fringe is temporarily relocating to Southwest this summer while making big renovations to its permanent Florida Avenue space. As always, there are SO many cool offerings. It can feel overwhelming. I usually like to pick a day and a time and then see what is happening. Or sometimes things just jump out to me, such as F*ck Tinder: A Love Story –a true tale of one man’s journey into intensive dating. Or perhaps Roko’s Baselisk, a show about computer science and divine retribution. Here’s the website. Get afringing.

Sunday, do some yoga at REI! The vinyasa flow class will be accompanied by a 90s hip hop playlist with Alia Khan from East Side Yoga. The 10 a.m. class is only $10. Register here.

Wait up! Need a plan for Monday? How about playing soccer at the Watkins Field, 13th and D Streets SE, at 8:30 p.m.? No super skills necessary, but the World Cup has given us a master class in soccer rules already, so why not prolong the magic? Email cymrot@gmail.com to get on their list– this is an ongoing event.
