To Do: Weekend of January 4th – 7th

Erika Rose stars in the world premiere production of Queens Girl in Africa at the Atlas

How are preparing for the upcoming bomb cyclone/polar vortex? I keep buying my teenagers warm socks and hoping our pipes don’t freeze. For those of you brave and well-clothed enough to leave your house, may I suggest the following fun things to attend?

Tonight, learn how to make your own kombucha at the Union Market Test Kitchen with the folks from Craft Kombucha. Brewing this probiotic wonder tea is not difficult and think of all the money you will save. The class begins at 6 p.m. and costs $50 ($80 per couple) and you will leave with your own starter kit. Register here.

Friday, be a part of the world premiere production of Queens Girl in Africa, a production of Mosaic Theatre Company of DC at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. The show is part of the citywide 2018 Women’s Voices Theater Festival and follows the character Jacqueline Marie Butler as she and her family sail to Nigeria following the assassination of her father’s close friend, Malcolm X. The show runs through February 4th and you can get tickets and learn more here.

Saturday, check out the Alexander Technique workshop at the Corner Store led by Susan Martin Cohen. You will earn body awareness, stress reduction techniques and gain greater mobility. The workshop is from 2 to 3:30 p.m. and costs $20. To register, email Susanatdc@aol.com

The Capitol Riverfront BID hosts Riverfront Resolutions, a morning of fitness fun at Canal Park from 10:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Take a VIDA fitness class with instructor Matt Coleman at 11 a.m. or learn to skate on the rink.

Monday night, head to the ice rink at the Wharf for Curling and Cocktails. You will be ready to impress your friends and co-workers during the upcoming Olympics with your new expertise in curling, the hockey/shuffleboard mash up invented by our Canadian friends. From 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. all over age 8 are welcome to sign up and learn. Spectators and curlers (over the age of 21) will be able to sample local cocktails.

Tuesday night, the Village Voices program of the Capitol Hill Village welcomes local actor, director and dramaturg, Marcus Kyd. Kyd is the Artistic Director of Taffety Punk Theatre, which performs at CHAW. He will be discussing the work of the Greek poet Sappho and how the company plans to explore her lyrics in upcoming performances and events. The event is free and begins at 7 p.m. at the Northeast Library.

  1. Canal Park says:

Thanks for including Riverfront Resolutions on your list! Because of the predicted extreme cold for this weekend, we will be MOVING the event to NEXT SATURDAY, January 13. Hope to see everyone there (when it is HOPEFULLY a little warmer)!
