We are once again entering December– though the mosquitoes beg to differ. Begone, pests!

While we wait for an eventual Mosquitopocalypse, how shall we spend our time?

Krampusnacht returns to H Street

Tonight, Mosaic Theatre Company presents The Real Americans at the Atlas Performing Arts Center. Actor/journalist Dan Hoyle traveled the US in a van for 100 days to try examine and shine a light on the country’s economic disparity and polarization. He brings to life many of the people he met along the way. Tickets are $20-$40 and can be purchased here. The show runs through December 22nd.

Friday, work on your figure drawing skills at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s Friday Artnight. This week is Working from the Figure. Teaching artist Will Fleishell will be on hand to assist students as they work capturing the likeness of a model. Easels are provided but bring your own materials. $15 fee to drop in.

Saturday, leave the Hill for a short while to check out the Smithsonian Holiday Festival at the Museum of American History. From 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday there will be performances, festive food, interactive activities, a chocolate-making demo and more. You can see a list of events here.

The Capitol Hill Chorale begins its 25th season with a concert Saturday evening called Homeward Bound. The Chorale is returning to its roots in Early American and Orthodox liturgical music and also looking ahead with a new composition by Composer-in-Residence, Kevin Siegfried. Performances are at the Lutheran Church of the Reformation at 212 East Capitol Street at 7:30 Saturday evening and at 4 p.m. Sunday afternoon. Tickets are $25 and you can get yours here.

Krampusnacht DC returns once again to H Street. The somewhat terrifying winter/holiday German tradition of the Krampus who comes out to search for little children has been transformed into a festive holiday event to raise money for Santa’s Cause DC which raises money to help kids in foster care. The evening begins at 5 p.m. at Gallery O/H with a family-friendly reception featuring performances and appearances by Mr. and Mrs. Claus. Then the Krampus walk heads down H with the Clauses and the awesome female drumming group Batala. (The Krampus is a sort of a goat-like creature. People work on their masks all year.) After the walk, those 21 and over can head back to the Gallery for more fun. The suggested donation in $15.

Sunday, bring the kids to the Hill Center  for a Peace Education Through the Arts workshop with One Common Unity, a peace education program which utilizes the arts. the hip hop group Fly by Light will lead the participants in creating a hip hip song using percussion and language. The workshop is from 3 to 5 p.m. and is $8 per family. You can register in advance here.
