To Do: Weekend of September 28th – October 1st

We are looking at a string of lovely days for this coming weekend. Maybe this is not quite fall weather; but if it that does not stop Starbucks,it should not stop you. So get out there and pick a few apples and snag a few gourds for the table. And you might check out these things too.

Dead Men’s Hollow performs Sunday afternoon at the Hill Center’s Family Day celebration

Tonight is a Pay What You Can preview of Taffety Punk Theatre Company’s She Rode Horses Like the Stock Exchange at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) at 7:30 pm. The comedy by Amelia Roper depicts two perfect couples in a perfect New England town as their worlds collapse due to the foreclosure and stock exchange crises. The production will run through October 14th and you can purchase tickets here.

Friday morning, witness the opening of Trader Joe’s at 7:55 am (CUE SCREAM). Those quirky Hawaiian-shirt-clad goofballs, choosing such an unusual time! Pick up all of the pumpkin spice-themed products to pair with your Two Buck Chuck and then pause to marvel at life and progress and the shifting landscape and vibe of the neighborhood. Or perhaps mark the day by ranting on a listserve/Facebook about parking. You do you.

That evening, celebrate the end of September at Game ON! with 202Creates. A made- and created-in-DC initiative Game on celebrates all things DC-made. The event will be held at 700 H Street Northeast, which has been host to the Future of Sport Installation. The event is free and runs from 6 to 10 p.m. Register here.

Saturday afternoon at DCanter wine shop on Barracks Row, check out a screening of Indivisible: Love Knows No Borders a film by local film maker Hilary Linder. Sponsored by Michelle Lim Warner, DCanter co-founder and CEO who herself was once an undocumented immigrant brought to the US by her mother the film tells the story of other Dreamers as they navigate the system. The event also features tastings of wines from wineries started by immigrants. The tasting begins at 4pm and the screening at 4:30pm. A Q and A with the film maker will follow. Tickets are $25. Learn more here.

Also on Saturday, Wisdom, 1432 Pennsylvania Avenue SE,  will be participating in Bee’s Knees Week to raise awareness about saving the bees. They will be unveiling the new “Queen’s Bee” starting at 5:30 p.m., until 7p.m.

Sunday is the Annual Family Day at the Hill Center. The center is housed in the Old Naval Hospital and so the day will featured events and activities from the Civil War Era such as demos by coppersmiths and blacksmiths as well as horse drawn wagon rides. There will also be face painting and balloon animals because contemporary children’s events require such things. The day closes with a concert by local bluegrass favorite Dead Men’s Hollow. The events are free but registration is advised. To register for Family day go here and for the concert go here.

PS: Hi! Maria here, with a couple of “Off-Hill, but what the Hill!” events for you –one coming to a close and one just starting:

  • TBDImmersive’s In Cabaret We Trust is a crazy assault of the senses. Designed to let the audience piece together the story, you’re going to need to go more than once to truly take it all in. Tickets here.
  • ARTECHOUSE’s Spirit of Autumn is a gorgeous fall scene waiting for you to play with it. Runs October 1-November 5, tickets here. Go in the morning with the kiddos; return in the evening with your sweetie and try a special “interactive” cocktail.
