To Do: Weekend of August 3rd – 6th

Sweet Spot Aerial Productions performs Smoky Mirrors at the Atlas this weekend

Have you noticed the days are definitely getting shorter? It’s not yet the gloom of late fall, but you know it is coming. Make haste with the fun, people!

Tonight, the Capitol Hill Chamber Music Festival goes back in time to explore the 17th century in a concert called Baroque in Transition. Musicians will play strings, including baroque instruments, such as the harpsichord, while critic and arts lover Robert Aubry Davis will be on hand to offer insights into the time period The concert begins at 7:30 at St. Mark’s Church. (3rd and A Streets SE) Tickets can be purchased here.

Yards Park is offering a free opportunity to touch greatness with a Beyonce’ dance class tonight. You can learn some choreography from some of her videos. No guarantee you will be as glamourous and fine but who cares. There are two opportunity to get in formation at 6:30 and 8. It’s a shame both of my teens are out of town because this would be such an amazing opportunity for mombarrasment. If only they didn’t block me on Snapchat…

The “Buy the Lady a Drink” series of free concerts continues tonight at the 201 Bar. This week, Pebble to Pearl will play in support of Cambodia! Although there is no cover, donations are encouraged and will make a difference. For more details and information, go to the Facebook event page. Doors open at 5, show is at 6 p.m.

Friday night is another chance to sit in your car and watch a movie! The Union Market Drive-In features the Jon Favreau movie Chef, about a big-time chef who quits his job and buys a food truck. I want to see that but the 8:30 start is way late for me on a Friday. But for those for you with heartier constitutions, enjoy! $10 per car and walk-ins are free. Get your parking in advance here.

Saturday, check out A Midsummer’s Musical at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop. CHAW is producing the show based upon Shakespeare’s classic tales of lovers, fairies and foolishness, set to a score by Barbara Schelstrate and directed by Lise Bruneau. Performances are at 3pm and 7:30 pm. For tickets, call 202.547.6839.

Sunday, go high with Sweet Spot Aerial Productions as they explore gender and identity through the thrilling medium of aerial dance and circus arts. Smoky Mirrors takes place at the Atlas Performing Arts Center and tickets are $10 $25. Learn more here.
