To Do: Weekend of January 19th – 22nd

Christylez Bacon performs at the Hill Center Sunday evening.

Hey. S’up?

Nothing much…you?

Not much. Oh wait. Hundreds of thousands of people are coming to our neighborhood this weekend, so that’s cool…

Many are fleeing town to avoid the hordes. But! If you are like me and sticking around, here are a few ideas on how to spend your time.

Tonight, Capital Fringe kicks off a weekend of film and music programming focused around Directed Action at the Logan Fringe Arts Space: Trinidad Theatre (1358 Florida Ave NE). This evening, Pink Line Project’s Phillippa Hughes moderates a screening of short documentary films and discussion. One film The Price of Certainty is about research into how some minds need black and white explanations while others tolerate ambiguity. Women on the Front Line examines the role women have played in social justice causes. The evening begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $20. Get yours here.

Friday, we observe the peaceful transition of power and that is the only positive thing I can manage to say about that.

That evening at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAWBashville from Nashville takes the stage. Lucciana Costa and Rachel Coats from SE Michigan and NW Ohio, currently residing in Nashville, TN, are music educators, performers and philanthropists who travel the country performing original and cover music ranging from piano pop to guitar folk and country. Between them they play seven instruments and engage in entertaining and playful banter. Tickets are $10 in advance and $12 at the door so get yours now. Show starts at 8 p.m.

Saturday is the Women’s March on Washington so there may be a lot of pink-hatted folks wandering around.

If you are not into crowds, head to Union Market. Framebridge Custom Framing is holding a pop up  all weekend long.

Sunday, the Hill Center kicks off  Eastern Market Art Series & Trainings also called EAST . The series brings artists and children (between 7 and 12 years old) together to explore a different craft or medium quarterly. From 3:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. kids are invited to participate in a craft-making event. This event is free; register here.

At 5 p.m., Grammy nominee and local treasure Christylez Bacon performs his one of-a-kind mix of storytelling, human beatbox and drumming. Kids and grown ups all adore him so bring the family. Tickets are $20 in advance and $20 at the door so get yours here now.

Peace out everyone. Stay safe no matter where you are and see you back here next week.

History has its eyes on us all.
