To Do: Weekend of January 12th – 15th

 

The Folger hosts a day of poetry and remembrance of the words of Dr. Martin Luther King on Monday.

Hey folks! One week out from … holy hell, we really have no idea. So how will you spend the final weekend of the Obama administration?

 

Tonight from 6pm to 8pm at the Hill Center hosts an opening reception for artists who will have shows at the Center in January, including Karen Cohen, Winston Harris, Marité Vidales and the Capitol Hill Art League. The reception is free and open to all. Complimentary wine will be available to enhance the viewing experience.

Friday evening from 6:30 to 8:30 is Paint ‘N Sip at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW). Participants receive step-by-step instruction from teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments. Call (202) 547-6839 for more information or to register.

Saturday, bring the kids to Dock 5 at Union Market for Create DC. From 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. the  DCPS Arts team welcomes all families to a day of creative play alongside DC’s artists, educators, and arts organizations. There will be workshops in theater, puppet making, drumming, dance, improvisation and more. The event is free. Learn more here.

Chef Gérard Pangaud holds and demonstration class in the Art of French Cooking at the Hill Center from 11am to 2pm. Students will learn to prepare a salad of seared tuna, a gratin of endives and ham with swiss cheese, and chocolate brownie with Chef Gerard’s vanilla ice cream. Sunday afternoon at 3 p.m., the Northeast Library invites families with kids 5 and older to an Afternoon with Winnie the Pooh. Kids will hear a story, watch a short movie, and make a Pooh and friends craft to take home. Snacks will be provided.

Monday is a day off for many in observance of Martin Luther King Jr. The Folger Shakespeare Library hosts Not Just Another Day Off: Where Do We Go From Here? at 11amThe event is a free and family- friendly community engagement program. Poets and actors perform excerpts from the speeches of Martin Luther King Jr. and others, weaving poetry throughout the presentations. The event is free but patrons are encouraged to bring donations of canned food for the Food Pantry of The Church of the Reformation or for school supplies for Miner Elementary School.
