To Do:

To Do: Weekend of September 7th – 10th

I hope this first week back to the normal grind has been mercifully mild for you. The traffic has absolutely increased, true. But that means that the fun and festivals of early fall are about to begin. Here are a few ideas to kick off this long stretch of good times.

Big Freedia headlines the Honey Groove Fest at Dock 5 at Union Market Saturday

Tonight, catch an opening reception for local artist Antarah Crawley at the Logan Fringe Art Space, the headquarters of the Capital Fringe festival (1358 Florida Ave NE). Crawley’s murals were on display at the Fringe’s former headquarters on NY Avenue but this will be his first exhibition. Titled, New Syllabus, an exhibit focused on empowering the individual. The reception is from 7 to 10 p.m. and will include a special performance.

Friday is Mind, Magic and Merlot at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) Mentalist Alain Nu shares some behind-the-scenes knowledge behind mind reading so you, too, can be a freak. This should give you enough time to practice and be ready to spook your family at Thanksgiving. The lesson is paired with tastings of Merlot to be enjoyed by all –all over 21, that is. I assume that the merlot grape must have some ability to highlight the mind-reading abilities and really didn’t deserve that slander it got in Sideways. The performance begins at 7:30 p.m. Get your tickets here.

Saturday is the Honey Groove LGBTQ Music and arts festival which will be held at Dock 5 at Union Market. The event features bounce diva Big Freedia who headlines a roster of performers and DJs. According to the event’s website, attendees should expect food trucks, live painting and lots of twerking. Tickets are $60 and the event is from 2 p.m. to 10 p.m. Get your tickets here.

Sunday close out the weekend with a concert at the Hill Center. Savannah Smith and Southern Soul will perform as part of the Center’s American Roots series. Based in Asheville, NC the musicians are known for their soulful sound, catchy melodies and soaring vocals. The concert is free and begins at 4:30 p.m. Register here.

Have a wonderful weekend, everyone!
