To Do Weekend of September 21st – 24th

Session American performs a free concert Sunday afternoon at the Hill Center.

Another weekend is almost here and I am more than ready.

I’m headed out of town but I entreat you: Take advantage all he fun this neighborhood has to offer.

Tonight, get to know the Anacostia river on a Pontoon Boat Tour at Diamond Teague Park. The Anacostia Watershed Society leads these one and two hour tours between 5:30 and 7:30 p.m. Tickets are available here.

Friday night, check out In Cabaret We Trust at Blind Whino art space, just off-Hill in Southwest, 700 Delaware Avenue SW. The collective known as TBD Immersive has created a experience which begins from the moment you enter and which is different for every audience member. Set in 2020, our dystopian future finds DC has had its Home Rule charter revoked. The story happens all around you and the audience and performers are invited to move through the space. The performance begins at 8 p.m. and you can learn more here. (Make sure you ask questions and explore throughout the whole space if you can. Also, make sure you have your fortune read by Mother Whisper. It was one of the highlights of my visit.– Maria Helena Carey)

Saturday is the Annual Barracks Row Festival. The schedule is jam-packed with performances and activities all afternoon including a troupe of performing Jack Russell Terriers, beer gardens, a donkey parade and the annual military chef cooking competition. Mayor Bowser is scheduled to stop by at 12:30 p.m. You can read the full schedule here.

The Second Annual Sip and Savor in support of the work of Capitol Hill Group Ministries also takes place this Saturday. From 7 to 10 p.m., attendees will enjoy food and drinks from local restaurants. To buy your ticket and learn more go here.

Make sure you take a nap on Saturday, because Art All Night is coming back to at least two neighborhoods near us. You can enjoy performances and wackiness within walking or biking distance all along H Street NE and along NoMa from 7 p.m. until 3 a.m. For additional information and tickets (hint: It’s free, but they like to know how many people are going), go here.

Sunday afternoon is another American Roots concert at the Hill center. Session Americana describes themselves thusly as “a rock band in a tea cup, or possibly a folk band in a whiskey bottle” which actually gives me an idea of what they may sounds like. A collective of musicians playing an array of instruments and the show sounds like a blast. I hope I make it back in time! The concert is free and begins at 4:30pm. Register in advance here.
