To Do: Weekend of August 24th – 27th

Hey everyone! Did you miss us? THIH took a break last week to rest up before the eclipse and the first day of school for DCPS kids. But we are back and ready to tell you how to spend you precious free time!

The 19th Street Band performs at Yards Park Friday night

Tonight at the Hill Center it’s “Two Film Guys from the Hill.” Mike Canning and Tom Zaniello offer the second installment in their series examing how NYC and DC are portrayed in two different films. Tonight is the Clint Eastwood classic In the Line of Fire, about a John Malkovich plot to assassinate the president and the guilt-ridden Secret Service officer who protects him. The screening begins at 7 p.m. and will be followed by a discussion. Register here.

Righteous Cheese at Union Market hosts Yes Way Rosé, a session on pairing the now-ubiquitous pink wine with cheese. The class will choose four cheeses and cover the basics of pairing. The cost is $49 and it will begin at 7 p.m. Secure your place here.

Friday, catch Mosaic Theatre of DC’s first show of its third season, The Devil’s Music: The Life & Blues of Bessie Smith. The show imagines the legendary singer’s final evening as she and her band are turned away from a white-only theatre. Featuring actress Miche Braden, who starred in the hit production of the show Off-Broadway. The production runs until September 24th and tickets are available here.

The 19th Street Band performs the free concert at Yards Park from 6:30 -8:30 p.m.

Saturday from 1 to 3 p.m., Pegah Shahghasemi, owner of Kuzeh Pottery, teaches a pottery workshop at Steadfast Supply (300 Tingey Street SE, #140) in Navy Yard. Participants will learn to make a hanging planter. The Kuzeh folks will fire the pieces and they will be ready with a few weeks. The $72 fee includes all materials and complimentary snacks will be provided. Register here.

If you are wondering where to watch the Mayweather Vs. McGregor fight, Barracks Row stalwarts The Ugly Mug and Finn McCool’s have your back. The Ugly Mug is preselling tables for the Saturday bout at $40/seat, which gets you a free drink of your choice. Door charge is $25 on the day of the fight. More info can be found here. Finn McCool’s is charging $20 cover charge at the door and offering a free drink on the house. More info can be found here.

Sunday stop by Union Market to catch the last day of the Millennial pop up. It’s not enough they are a gargantuan generation but we must also have colors and clothing companies named after them too? Gen X would never have done such a thing. SIGH. Anyway, check out the Made in the USA line of graphic tees, totes and sweatshirts. I will bring my Gen Z teens over for a look too.

Whatever you choose to do this weekend, have a blast and enjoy the last days of summer. (SIIIIIGH)
