To Do Weekend of April 6th – 9th

This Sunday is the Annual Anacostia River Festival

Some weeks feel longer than others and this is one of them. Bring on all the weekend fun time things!

Tonight in the Union Market Test Kitchen, learn to make homemade body scrubs with Amina Ahmad of Handmade Habitat at Bazaar Spices. You will learn about salts, sugars, and oils to help give your skins that healthy glow. The workshop is $45 and begins at 6 p.m. Register here.

The Hill Center celebrates Emancipation Day all weekend. Friday evening is a conversation about the 13th Amendment with NPR editor and producer of Code Switch.  Juleyka Lantigua-Williams moderates a conversation with Ms. Christina Swarns and Dr. Greg Carr. Swarns is the Director of Litigation for the NAACP-Legal Defense Fund. Carr is associate professor and chair of the Department of Afro-American Studies at Howard University. Mentalist Alain Nu returns to Capitol Hill Arts Workshop Friday night to teach some of the finer points of mind reading. Attendees will get a behind-the-scenes look at mentalism while sipping merlot. Tickets are $35 and the workshop begins at 7:30 p.m. Register here.

Saturday, the Friends of the Southeast Library hosts its monthly book sale on the lover level of the library from approximately 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Entrance to the sale is through the library (and down the stairs) or through the basement door on the D street side.

Mosaic Theater is presenting two plays about South Africa in a repertory called South Africa: Then and Now. The Athol Fugard 1960s classic Blood Knot runs in repertory with the contemporary A Human Being Died That Night by Nicholas Wright based on the best-selling book by Pumla Gobodo-Madikizela. Catch the latter production at 3 p.m. and then stick around for a post-show discussion. Learn more here.

Capital Fringe hosts a photography exhibit by local groups A Creative DC, Exposed DC, DC Focused, IGDC and StreetMeetDC (and includes a piece from our own Maria!) Swing by the opening reception between 7 p.m. and 10 p.m. and mingle with the artists and see our city through their eyes. Learn more here.

Sunday is the Anacostia River Festival from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. The free event, part of the larger Cherry Blossom Festival, highlights local artists, cycling and the River itself. All are invited to take a canoe out on the river, shop for creations by local artisans and take a bike ride along the Anacostia River Trail. The full schedule can be found here.
