To Do: Weekend of January 26th – 29th

Harmonius Wail performs at The Corner Store Saturday evening.

And the sun comes up, and the world still spins.

Are you exhausted from a crazy week of keeping up with jaw-dropping news and constant phone calls to representatives? You deserve some R and R. Try this:

Tonight, learn a new skill! Chef Wendi James is teaching sushi-rolling at the Hill Center. Learn to make hand rolls (temaki), small rolls (hosomaki), vegetarian rolls and inside-out rolls (uramaki) with a variety of veggies and fish. This class covers how to cook sushi rice, what ingredients you will need, techniques on rolling the different types of sushi and how to pair the sushi with different sauces. The class costs $65 and begins at 6:30 p.m. and you can register here.

You could also learn the basics of wine and cheese pairing with Righteous Cheese at Union Market. Fromager Katherine Schramm-Strosser will delve into the story behind each cheese, as well as give advice about selecting, serving, pairing, and more. The class costs $49 and begins at 7 p.m. Register here.

Friday, check out a preview performance of Mosaic Theater’s world premiere of Hooded: Or Being Black for Dummies a dark comedy set in Baltimore. The playwright, Tearrance Arvelle Chisholm, is currently an MFA student at Catholic University. Friday’s performance begins at 8:15 p.m. and tickets are available here. Hooded runs through February 19th.

Saturday, the Friends of the Northeast Library will host a used book sale from 10:30 am to 2 p.m. in the basement of the library. There will be three rooms full of a wide variety of donated books for sale.  This sale will feature a particularly large selection of new non-fiction books.  The proceeds from the sale go to support community programming at the library located at 7th and Maryland Avenue NE.

That evening The Corner Store (9th and South Carolina SE) presents Harmonious Wail at 8 p.m. The Gypsy Swing band is known for upbeat rhythms, tight harmonies, and virtuoso instrumental work.  Tickets are a $20 donation with rsvp.

Sunday drop by Union Market to check out the pop up by super hip watch designers Eone.
