I’m on vacation, so let’s make this quick.

Summer is ticking away for DCPS kids who go back to school on Monday –which is just way too early IMHO. Live it up, kids! Make these final moments last. Sigh.

The living it up? How shall we do it?

Tonight learn to pair Spanish wines and cheeses with the folks from Righteous Cheese in Union Market’s Test Kitchen. Forager Katherine Schramm-Strosser will share each cheese’s backstory –because everything has a backstory–  as well as give advice about choosing and pairing. The class begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $49. Get more information here.

Friday the Hill Center presents Dounouya, the Liberian Women’s Chorus for Change, as part of its ongoing Global Sounds Series. The series which is curated by  Brendan Canty and Jim Thomson feature artists on the cutting edge of global music. Dounouya (DOON-EE-YA) is the West African word for “The Whole World.” The chorus is composed of Liberians living in the Philadelphia region and their music uses the power of Liberian cultural traditions to strengthen communities. The concert begins at 7 p.m. and tickets are $12 in advance and $15 the day of the show. Purchase them here.

East City Bookshop hosts a lunchtime concert by Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s String Band in the courtyard of the store (weather permitting) at 11:30am. The concert is free and open to all.

Saturday at 2 p.m., learn the ins and outs of mystery writing at east City Bookshop. The panel discussing featuring area masters of mystery E.A. Aymar, Con Lehane, Alan Orloff, and Colleen J. Shogan. The conversation will cover writing and publishing your work and is free and open to all. Register here.

Sunday, Rock and Roll Hotel kicks off a week of celebrating its 10th birthday with a performance by band Ex Hex featuring local guitar hero Mary Timony. I already have my ticket and despite having just come home from vacation AND it being the night before school starts I plan to attend because I am insane just that rock and roll. ZZZzzzzzzz.
