On the two days before Veterans Day last week, and in honor of the 100th anniversary of the interment of the Unknown Soldier from World War I, the public was allowed to leave flowers at his tomb. (RSP)
The space between the steps used by visitors to watch the changing of the guard and the tomb itself is used today exclusively by the Old Guard during their duties. For these two days, the members of the 3rd Regiment were pushed to the east side of the tomb (RSP)
And the changing of the guard was a much less elaborate ceremony, (RSP)
For the duration of the change, the procession by the public was stopped, giving a good view of the masses of flowers that had been left. (RSP)
In fact, the number of flowers left made it necessary to stop the proceedings every now and then in order that they could be redistruted around the sides of the tomb. (RSP)
