10 Years on the Hill for Labyrinth

Ten years ago, my friend Tim Krepp mentioned that a friend of his was opening a new store on Capitol Hill, one that specialized in board games and puzzles. He introduced me to Kathleen Donahue, who filled me in on the details. The store, named Labyrinth, opened shortly thereafter. I was immediately intrigued and have not only been a big fan and supporter since, I was even interviewed for a radio piece about the store.

I am hardly alone in my support, and it has been a pleasure to watch the store thrive and expand, becoming an institution not only at their location on Pennsylvania Avenue, but within school across the District, where they run after school game programs, and in our community, where they have raised money for various good causes, including games for schools and money the Children’s National Hospital.

The last few months have been rough, for obvious reasons, with the in-person events that Labyrinth did so well being out of the question. On the other hand, the perfect thing to do when stuck at home is playing games and – especially – doing puzzles. And with coronavirus cases trending up again, it looks like we will be spending the next couple of months indoors.

So, you really do not need any further reason to pay Labyrinth a visit, either in person or virtually, Nonetheless, there is one: They will be celebrating their 10th anniversary all this month, and they promise all sorts of special events and promotions.

The first one is a (virtual) store of limited edition merchandise where you can get anything from good old-fashioned t-shirts to iPhone cases to socks. And, of course, the appropriate item for these virus-laden times: A facemask.

Waiting to be allowed in after the store reopened in July (RSP)

Even better, if you take a picture of your new purchase, you can send it in and be entered into a photo contest, judged by Labyrinth staff, with a top prize of the choice of one of two game bundles. Follow Labyrinth on social media and post your picture with the hashtag @#Labyrinth10 to enter. Enter by November 30th. More information here.

And by following Labyrinth on Facebook, you can also enter their Trivia Tuesday giveaway, where the first ten correct responses will win gift cards.

And, as you browse their merchandise, remember that there are under 50 days until Christmas, and you will want to be extra-early in getting ready for a socially-distanced celebration this year. Even here, Labyrinth has your back, with a their new Gift Assist program, where you can enter data on those for whom you are shopping and they will help you find just the right gift. It will be (almost) like being there in person. And hopefully this need for distance will soon be a thing of the past, and we will be able to celebrate many more anniversaries in person.
