- MPD Focusing Street Safety Outreach on E‑Bike and E‑Scooter Riders Across the District
Beginning October 16, 2026, and continuing through the end of the year, the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is focusing its street-safety outreach on e-bikes and e-scooters across the District of Columbia.
As part of this initiative, MPD officers will engage directly with residents and visitors to address unsafe behaviors and promote safe riding practices for different mobility devices, protecting everyone on DC roads. This is a citywide effort across all patrol districts, with increased efforts in areas with high concentrations of these devices. Those locations include the U-Street Corridor, Navy Yard, and Gallery Place-Chinatown.
“We want to ensure everyone understands the rules of the road and makes safety a priority,” said Interim Chief of Police Jeffery W. Carroll. “Whether you walk, drive, or ride, we all have a responsibility to protect one another and keep our streets and sidewalks safe.”
This initiative comes as the District has seen a 62% increase in traffic fatalities so far this year when compared to the same period last year. Roadway safety remains one of the Department’s top priorities, and MPD is committed to working with partner agencies across the District to promote safer streets and reduce preventable tragedies.
MPD reminds e-scooter and e-bike riders that safety practices are designed to protect everyone who shares the road. Riders are encouraged to travel with the flow of traffic, yield to pedestrians, follow posted signs and signals, and refrain from riding on sidewalks within the Central Business District. Only one rider should be on a device at a time.
Additionally, riders are urged to wear helmets, maintain visibility by wearing bright clothing, ride on the right side of the roadway, use hand signals appropriately, avoid wearing earphones, stay alert to obstacles, and always conduct themselves responsibly.
If you notice someone operating one of these devices irresponsibly, you can submit a tip by calling (202) 727-9099 or texting 50411. For non-emergencies, call 311; for emergencies, call 911. For more information, visit: mpdc.dc.gov/trafficsafety.
