To Do From Home, Week of June 18, 2020

Hey there! I hope that, wherever you are, you are staying healthy and safe. Here are a few things for you to do this, uh, weekend. This is basically just a list of fun things you can do anytime, so pace yourself and enjoy.

StepAfrika! is doing it up big for Juneteenth and YOU ARE INVITED! More information below.

First off, tomorrow is June 19, also known as Juneteenth. The first thing that you will be doing, if you don’t already know about it, is reading all about this special holiday. You can start with this article on The Root, then this article on The Root, and then this other one on The Root, and then you can spend looking at 30 days of Iconic Music Video Blackness on Very Smart Brothas, on The Root. You need The Root in your life– I cannot emphasize this enough.

How else can you celebrate Juneteenth? StepAfrika! is celebrating this special holiday starting at 8 p.m. tomorrow, June 19 with electrifying dance and other online happenings. The event is free but Step Afrika! welcomes your donations. Register ahead here. Need to get pumped up? Watch a trailer here.

Want to join the Juneteenth celebrations around the area? Instagram user @spaxson has a list of resources, some virtual and some in person. You can access her profile by clicking on the username, and you can access the list of events and resources here.

Feel like venturing out to an outdoor bar? There are so many available. The Capitol Hill BID shared a very good list on their social media platforms:

Add to this list places like Taco City and The Brig at the southern end of 8th Street NE, as well as Trusty’s on 14th and Pennsylvania. Of course, several patios are also open and starting to reopen when Phase Two kicks off on June 22. The Wharf is also doing a special pop-up outdoor bar they are calling Camp Anthem at the District Pier. $250 reserves you a cabana– this gets applied toward your tab. Children and pets are welcome, but both need an adult 😉 Make your reservation here.

Feel like staying inside but treating yourself? Remember that most of our local places are open and offering takeout! You can cozy up over a fancy meal and tune in to City Winery’s CWTV– lots of great concerts as they might have happened if we could go places. Tune in here.

Miss trivia in your life? Make sure you enter Wisdom’s trivia, every single Wednesday starting at 8:30 p.m. For details on how to join, email Wisdomtrivia@gmail.com

Finally, let’s just say that it’s not Rosé all Day but more like all Summeré. Helping with this concept is The Yards, who postponed their June 13 Rosé day event to June 27. This is the last week you can order your rosé boxes, so do it right here and cheers, everyone.
