More Furlough Specials Around the Neighborhood

Photo by @MonikerDC via our Instagram hashtag, #thehillishome

Yesterday, we told you about Music on the Hill’s gift to those of you who are furloughed: Free music lessons! You can read more about that here– lessons started today!

We’ve also shared a citywide link from our friend, Barred in DC, about ongoing furlough specials.

A few businesses have sent us special deals they are offering to Federal workers who are furloughed. Is your business offering something special– community, food, music, joy, commiseration? Email us at info@thehillishome.com!

Wisdom, 1432 Pennsylvania Avenue SE
Are you a federal employee? Need a drink to handle the ongoing government shutdown? Wisdom is giving all federal workers 15 percent off when they present a valid federal ID.
You can commiserate with other people who worry too much about a wall on Sunday nights, starting January 13. Wisdom screens episodes of Game of Thrones, seasons 6 & 7, starting at 7 p.m.

The Ugly Mug, 723 8th Street SE
The Ugly Mug, one of the few remaining “dive bars” on Capitol Hill, throws it back every Tuesday beginning January 15 with The Affordable Meal Act, a nod to “intern nights” of old where young staffers can get a meal they can afford with their meager earnings, stipends, and allowances.

These affordable meals are just $7 and that includes a side of fries. Guests have four meal options created by Executive Chef, Ryan Hackney: DC Carryout Burger, topped with smoked cheddar, sautéed onions, bacon and house-made mac sauce; “Tropic Thunder,” half a basket of fried chicken thighs and mambo sauce; “KFC or Korean Fried Chicken which includes five chicken wings coated in Korean BBQ sauce and sprinkled with peanuts; or a Veggie Fried Rice Bowl full of seasonal vegetables. The Affordable Meal Act is available from 4pm-close. But early arrival is suggested. From 4-5pm, rail drinks, house wine, and a selection of beers are available for $2. The price goes to $3 from 5-6 p.m., and $4 from 6 p.m. to close.

Healthy Fresh Meals (online-based local business)

Healthy Fresh Meals wants to do their part in helping furloughed government employees with free meals during this difficult time with the shutdown.

Founders, Shana Greenbaum and Luba Hansen are both former USDA contractors, and know how hard it can be on people not receiving paychecks. Both went through two shutdowns when they were working at USDA, and are still in touch with many former colleagues who have not seen a paycheck in weeks.

Healthy Fresh Meals wants to offer 5 FREE meals (each) to the first 150 employees, and a discount of 25% off for everyone that can provide a government ID and proof of not working during the shutdown.

Workers can contact Healthy Fresh Meals via a special email set up for this: HFMShutdown@gmail.com

The Daily Rider

Furloughed Fed? Netflix queue empty? Let’s work on bikes!

Sitting at home is nice for a while. But wouldn’t it be nice to take your bike out for a ride to forget about everything for a while? Wait, are those tires flat? When was the last time that chain saw oil? Last Summer? The last administration? The Clinton administration?

Come into the shop on Tuesday the 15th of January at 10:30AM and we’ll go over the basics of bike maintenance. Bring your bike and we might use it as an example. We’ll even let you use some of our tools!

Space is limited, so please let us know if you’re coming. Email us or hit us up on social media.
