The Hill is Home is sharing the statements of ANC candidates in our general region. Although the main focus of our blog is Capitol Hill –served by ANCs 6A through 6C– we feel that a community is made stronger by the neighbors with whom we share a close geographical area. We are honored to share candidate statements from neighbors from Ivy City to Navy Yard, with minor style edits. To all of you who are running: Thank you. –Maria Helena Carey and Kate McFadden

Dear Neighbors,

Since September 2017 I’ve had the honor of representing our community as an Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner for 6A04, an area including Lincoln Park and bounded by 12th, East Capitol, 15th and C streets Northeast. I was called to fill the mid-term vacancy because of my efforts to reduce illegal speeding on Constitution. Earlier this year we saw real results: the installation of four raised crosswalks and a speed table in the 15 MPH school zones at Maury and Eliot-Hine. I am eager to continue this and other vital work on your behalf.

In my day job, I support early literacy programs and research in low-income countries all around the world. In comparison, the affairs of the ANC are about as local as they come. So why do it? My service as a Commissioner provides me with a connection to the neighborhood and the satisfaction that comes from problem-solving. It is also is a way for me to give back to the community that has given our family so much during the nearly twelve years we have lived on the Hill, including high quality public education, libraries and parks; a walkable, livable and supportive village for raising our two girls; and friends and neighbors who might as well be family.

If re-elected, I plan to continue to advance the following priorities on your behalf:

Improve the safety and well-being of all who traverse our sidewalks and streets by reducing illegal speeding and improving infrastructure for safe, sustainable transportation alternatives;
Increase support for our most vulnerable residents, especially seniors, young people and the marginalized;
Support residents to make reasonable improvements to their homes;
Advocate on behalf of residents to secure timely and responsive District services;
Support the work of the ANC Committees (Community Outreach, Zoning and Economic Development, Transportation and Public Space, and Alcohol and Beverage Licensing); and
Listen to and advance the goals of our diverse community in continuing to make Capitol Hill a vibrant, inclusive and healthy place to live.

Although I am running unopposed in this election –and somewhat cheekily wonder if it is a credit to my efforts or simply that no one else wants to take this on–I hope to use this opportunity to better understand your needs so I can improve my service to our community in the years to come. Finally, I recognize the many privileges that permit me to serve you in this volunteer role, including the support of my family and the flexibility of my employer, which allow me to attend hearings and meetings on your behalf. If you have questions, concerns or want to receive my email updates please contact me at AmberANC6A@gmail.com or attend our next ANC meeting.

Kind regards,

Amber Gove
