The To Do List

Another weekend of sunny spring weather is approaching, and with it a crop of diverse, unique, and interesting special events on and around Capitol Hill.  That is, despite the delayed opening of Biergarten Haus on H St, NE and Chesapeake Room on Barracks Row.  Cross your fingers that these folks get their sign-offs ASAP so we can start enjoying their fun and good fare.  Aren’t we all coveting their patios already?

Thursday

Head over to the Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street NE for the Washington City Paper’s Summer Music Guide Party.  Local bands like White Ford Bronco and Batala will perform, as well as DJs later in the evening.  No cover charge, and doors open at 6:30 p.m.

Friday

Join the Capitol Hill Youth Choir for their Spring Concert at 6:00 p.m. and again at 7:30 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop.  Tickets are just $5 each or $10 per family at the door.

A special concert at the Library of Congress by the Woodley Ensemble celebrates the music of Schumann and Barber at 8:00 p.m.  Follow the music to the Coolidge Auditorium in the Jefferson Building.

Saturday

Looking for that random kitchen utensil or some gently-used clothing?  Head to St. Peter’s Catholic Church for the annual St. Peter’s School Yard Sale, 8:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.  In addition to many of the usual yard sale items, the event includes a bake sale, grilled lunch, and a kids fun fair.

Learn about the history and (permanent) residents at Congressional Cemetery during the free, docent-led tours from 11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.  Tours continue the third Saturday of each month through November so if you can’t make it this month you’ll have more opportunities.  Contact the Cemetery if you’d like to bring a large group on one of the tours.

Learn about the healing powers of music at a special workshop at the Library of Congress.  From 2:00 to 4:30 p.m., check out “Managing Stress and Enhancing Wellness with Music Therapy” in the Mumford Room at the LOC.  Reservations are required.

Spend the evening in the company of artwork produced by local artist Ellen Cornett at the opening of her exhibition, “Juxtapositions” at Studio H on Saturday from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m.  The exhibit continues at the gallery through June 14.

Saturday is also the last day to catch “The Old Settler” at the Atlas Performing Arts Center.  Performances end with the 8:00 p.m. show on Saturday.

The DC United play the Colorado Rapids at home on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.  The first 5,000 fans in the gates receive a DC United cleats bag.

Sunday

Celebrate the tenth anniversary of Capitol Hill Bikes with special group rides, refreshments, and a one-day sale on accessories.  What better way to enjoy a spring day on the Hill than a bike ride with new friends?

Need more live music this weekend?  Head back to the Rock and Roll Hotel on H Street, NE for Local H and Kinch at 8:30 p.m.  Tickets start at $12.

A couple additions to the list:
The Capitol Hill Classic 10K race is this Sunday, 5/16, starting at 8:30 a.m. If you aren’t running or cheering on your neighbors, remember there will be some road closures. More information at http://www.capitolhillclassic.com/info.html.

And while not on the Hill, if you plan on heading downtown for anything remember it’s “Police Week” and there are events planned at and around the Law Enforcement Memorial (Judiciary Square Metro).
