The To Do List

Mid-February is here, and with it, a promise of a mini-break to celebrate those forty-four great (and not-so-great) Americans who have headed the Executive branch of government.  Woo, Presidents’ Day!  Let’s face it: you will be sleeping and then saving your energy so you can hate on Tuesday with renewed vigor.  Until then, let’s find you something fun to do, shall we?

For starters, what could possibly be the ten most glorious days in the history of the sandwich are here: Belga Café introduces its Sandwich Week, February 16-25.  For ten majestic days, they will be serving an array of delicious sandwiches at lunchtime, with some awesome-sounding sides.  I think Monday kind of begs you to try the pulled pork sandwich, don’t you agree?

This is also the last weekend you can catch Gross National Product’s production of The Sound of Palin at the Atlas– that quirky and off-beat parody of The Sound of Music and the meta-parody that is Sarah Palin.  Beforehand, have dinner at Smith Commons, 1245 H Street NE? I hear the burgers are awesome, as well as the service!  Afterward, you can saunter on across the street and have a drink or two at the newly-opened Church and State, 1236 H Street, SE.  May I suggest you try a Rickey?

At The Fridge, 516 8th Street, SE, you can laugh and ponder on life’s deeper themes with 11½ Pieces on Death, Dying, Life & Living (A Comedy) Created and Performed by Anthony Wills, Jr.  The show starts at 8 pm on Friday the 18th, and at 9:30 pm on Saturday the 19th.  For the kiddie set, the Singing Lizard will be FREE in concert at CHAW, 545 7th Street SE, on Saturday, February 19th at 10 am.  Let the Singing Lizard’s sound, a mix of “eclectic electronica and cheery soul” make your Saturday that much happier. (And maybe prepare you for a sandwich at Belga?)

Incidentally, if you are not quite at the stage where the children are out of the womb, you might want to relax, stretch, and make new pals with a 5-week prenatal yoga series at Healing Arts of Capitol Hill, 320 G Street, NE, starting at 9 am on Sunday February 20.  You can get more details at the instructor’s website— and having been there, I can tell you your back will thank you.

For those who are not in a family way, why not pep up your Sunday instead?  You can get your hiney to Red Bow Studio, 308 Massachusetts Ave, NE, at noon on this and every Sunday and do ZUMBA!  The Colombian-created dance workout is a great incentive to indulge guilt-free in a margarita at La Lomita afterward (have you voted in our Best Margarita poll yet?).

And yay for a three-day weekend!  You can bring it to a close in style with the Corner Store’s concert series, 21st at 21 Gessford Court.  The event is, as you may have guessed, at 21 Gessford Court and it’s BYOB.  For a $10 donation, you can have a rollicking good time and be thankful that we have those checks and balances in place.

The American Association for the Advancement of Science is having their Annual Meeting this weekend, and on Saturday and Sunday is having public events. The one I wanted to let you all know about was Family Science Days. More information can be found here:
