The To Do List: Week of November 7, 2024

Poppies are for Remembrance Day, but Anemonemonemonemones are for saying over and over. Beautiful photo by @districtinbloom on Instagram

Yeah, Tuesday was not great for many of us. But here are two things to think about:

  1. We survived four years of this already
  2. We can do fun things

Tonight! The Metropolitan Police Department’s First District will be screening Sing 2, at Lincoln Park. Gather the kiddos and come enjoy a night with friends and neighbors! Gather on the center lawn starting at 5:30 p.m., the movie starts at 6 p.m.

Let’s start off with this important reminder: it’s Second Saturday! That means that Capitol Hill Books, 657 C Street SE, is serving wine and cheese from 5-7:30 p.m. and offering a 10% on your in-store purchases from 5 p.m through closing. If you are into discussing books, this month’s selection is Pet Semetary by Stephen King.

The Library of Congress has a special family program to celebrate Veterans Day. On November 9, come to the Library and learn about Victory Gardens through special activities. Learn more about it here and sign up for timed passes here.

Saturday and Sunday is also Novemberfest! Come to Eastern Market for live music at the market! More info here.

Need a good cry? Mosaic Theater has you covered with their latest production, The Art of Care.Mosaic Theater operates out of Atlas Performing Arts Center on 13th and H NE. Learn more about the production here and get tickets here.

Mini Review: The Art of Care is a deeply intimate play, blending artists’ lived experiences with the universal theme of caring for people. What does care look like? Seven local artists explore what that deep, intimate and vulnerable bond looks like, as they try to give shape to what it means to care for someone through the words of health professionals, family members, and loved ones. The result is a fragile, emotional web of love and loss that will resonate with audience members willing to let these stories touch them deeply. Whatever you do, bring tissues.

Still in the spooky mood? Lykos Anthropos runs through November 24 and you can get tickets here. Make sure you are prepared to walk in the dark and bring a folding chair or a sturdy picnic blanket because the play runs 75 minutes with no intermission. May we also recommend you bring a fully charged phone so you can use your flashlight, just in case?

Is music more your thing? The Hill Center has one of their Stone Room Concerts this Friday at 8 p.m., featuring duo Moors & McCumber. For more info and tickets, click here.

And don’t forget the Pie Shop has kickass music almost every night of the week. On Monday, go listen to Lockstep, God Is War and Vaelastrasz. Check out the artists by clicking on the links and buy tickets to the show here. (Will be adding Lockstep to my Spotify.)

Need something for your school age kid (and youself)? The Northeast Neighborhood library has Crafternoon on Thursday, November 14. Glitter it up and feel your stress melt away. For more info and to RSVP, click here. Can’t borrow a 7 year old for Crafternoon? Stick around later that Thursday for BINGO at 6 p.m.

November is for remembrance and poetry: The Hill Center will be hosting Profs and Pints on November 14 for Poets of the First World War. Learn about the chroniclers of a war that changed the world through its carnage and technological advances. Tickets and more info here.

Reminder: Lincoln Park will be closed through the end of November. From NPS: “Starting October 9, the north playground in Lincoln Park will be closed for maintenance. The National Park Service will replace the retaining wall, replace the gate latches, and complete other minor repairs such as power washing the playground equipment and touching up paint.” Updates can be found on NPS’s  website.

One more: Monday is Veterans Day, which doesn’t have an apostrophe because”Veterans” is an attributive noun, AND because Veterans Day honors all Veterans but it doesn’t belong to anyone. Also, don’t forget that trash pick-up slides a day.

OFF-HILL

Get wined and dined for a good cause! The MedStar Health and Four Seasons DC Wine and Dine Event is a tasty and star-studded showcase and benefit. Friday’s dinner is sold out, but get tickets for Thursday, November 14th’s passed hors d’oeuvres event. More info and tickets here.

PLAN AHEAD

The Break My Game Playtest is a chance for game designers to test games and for players to enjoy games in development ahead of others, while also helping explore potential pitfalls or problems with design. Have fun being a guinea pig! The fun is happening at Labyrinth on November 16. Learn more and RSVP here.

Are you a caretaker for someone who is struggling with Alzheimer’s? The Voices Festival Production’s Community Care Roundtableon November 19 will examine how the tools of art-making can offer new paradigms in addressing issues of social invisibility, neglect, bureaucratic dehumanization, and familial strife often experienced during the throes of caregiving. There will also be a free reading of The Caregiver Interview Project on November 17 and 18. Want more information? Click here. Tickets here.
