The To Do List: Week of August 12, 2022

We made it to Friday! Don ‘t forget, we’re still celebrating Ward 6 Week and today starting at 5 p.m. there will be a special version of Live, on the Hill at Eastern Market Metro Plaza. Enjoy Herb Scott and his saxophone, and while you’re at it, grab some dinner from one of our many restaurants! It’s a win-win.

Mr. Henry’s always has a great line-up! Follow them on Instagram for more updates.

Craving more jazz? There are great acts almost every single night of the week at Mr. Henry’s. Here is this week’s line-up.

Get your sk8 on at the Wharf! For those who have always loved rocking and rolling (and even for those who watch, terrified, from the sidelines), the Wharf has been operating a roller rink this summer. It’s open Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. and Sundays from 3 to 7 p.m. More info here.

Worried about your tailbone? Then let’s do a little salsa instead! Another fun Ward 6 Week activity, go do some salsa from 7-9 p.m. at the transit wharf. Azucaaaaa! More details here.

This weekend, why not catch the Nats as they play San Diego Padres and cry when they announce their hot new player. Oh no, no. Please don’t actually cry. But you know, just… I dunno. Enjoy watching us lose, I guess. Tickets here.

A nice Jewish boy who can barbecue? Sign us up! The Hill Center will be hosting Silver and Sons Barbecue for BBQ Boot Camp. Intrigued? Hungry? Sign up quickly, as space is limited. Click here for more.

Did you know the U. S. Capitol holds Capitol Conversations on weekdays at 1 p.m.? These virtual sessions are informative and fun–– a neat opportunity to learn something new while you eat your lunch. On Tuesday, August 16, learn about Congress and the Morrill Land-Grant Acts, established to open colleges in every state. Yay, education! Register here. Can’t make it Tuesday? Check out other Capitol Conversations here.

Tuesdays during the month of August, starting August 9, you can do yoga at The Yards. Called the Sundeck Salutation Series, this free class goes from 7:30 to 8:30 a.m. And if you show up early, you can receive a branded yoga block for your own daily practice. Don’t forget water and a mat! More info and RSVP here.

You know that Trusty’s is the spot for no-fuss burgers and beers (and soup! We have some BIG soup fans!). But did you know that Trusty’s is also the spot for live music? This Wednesday, come listen to multitalented neighbor Jim Havard, who will be joined by  Chad Bartlett (banjo, keys and vocals) and Sarah Hanks (violin/fiddle), 7-10 p.m. By the way, Jim says he’s planning a second act. Intrigued? Now you have to come by!

Did you miss the corpse flower opening? Here is a time-lapse by the Smithsonian Gardens Instagram account.

OFF-HILL

Llamas are the most flawless camelids — and I’m not just saying that because they are New World camelids. Have a teen or two who needs something quirky and cute to do as summer winds down? Send them to the MLK Library on Wednesday, August 17 to weave a special

Can’t get enough of outdoor movies? Union Market District’s Drive-In series happens the second Friday of the month. This month is Dirty Dancing. More info and tickets here.

Are you a Studio Ghibli fan? The Japanese animation studio has created movies that are touching, funny, mesmerizing and more akin to watching a moving painting than a cartoon. More info and tickets here.

We may chuckle at the rebranding of Crystal City as National Landing or NaLa, but hey––it’s catchy. If you want to catch an outdoor movie, you can do so starting tonight at Movies in the Park. Tonight’s movie has been rescheduled, but more information and details here.

PLAN AHEAD

Get tickets to The Till Trilogy at Mosaic Theater Company. This collection of three works focuses on the 1955 murder of Emmet Till, a 14-year old child who was tortured and killed for allegedly offending a white woman.
