Farewell to The Shed (But wait! There’s more!)

If you’ve been following us on Instagram, you know we’ve been big fans of Rebecca Margao and her reselling business called The Shed. Rebecca has run The Shed from a Hill East garage for a couple of years, uniting neighbors and DC residents to fun, funky, exciting and one-of-a-kind furniture and housewares.

Rebecca recently announced on her Instagram page that she will be closing down her business and moving on. She is having a final drop-by sale this Sunday, June 12, between 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. We caught up with Rebecca to ask her why she’s closing down and what is next.

“I don’t think people understand how labor-intensive The Shed is,” Rebecca tells me. The past year has been a whirlwind for her and she is looking to change speeds, because after a year of scouting items, picking them up, staging them for photos and making appointments for clients and photographing them with their new acquisitions ––a process she absolutely loves–– she needs a break. Running a shop out of a space that is not insulated from the elements can also bring its own problems: if you’re staging, photographing and waiting for pick-up, you’re at the mercy and whims of a 19- or a 90-degree day.

Rebecca got her start thrifting as a teen and moved on to reselling from Craigslist, deriving joy from finding one-of-a kind items, guided by her excellent taste and her artistic eye. She loves finding pieces that have special character and connecting them with buyers who will love them. But after learning many lessons and meeting many fans of her work and taste, it’s time to move on to new experiences. This is why The Shed will close– but not the website. You will still be able to buy special custom signs and cheeseboards over at thesheddc.com. Make sure you’re also still following her on Instagram.

So, what’s next? Rebecca looks forward to being able to empower people to find furniture and decorating gems on their own. She will soon release an ebook titled, “How to source like a pro,” and we’ll pass on the information as soon as we know more. Also, Rebecca has a surprise coming next month– and we can’t wait to find out what it’ll be!

If you want to stop by The Shed this Sunday, you can say hello and buy something fun behind 521 16th Street SE, in the alley.

I scored a couple of bright yellow chairs last year at The Shed– and I love them.
