The To Do List: Week of July 1, 2021

There are many fun things to do, but the one that’s singlehandledly occupying all the real estate in our minds is the Fourth of July. Fireworks, barbecues and parades dominate this most American of holidays– especially since last year it was entirely too quiet (in the figurative sense– y’all still brought all the firecracker noise last year like they weren’t making them anymore).

Enjoy the Fourth of July fireworks! Photo courtesy of the District Wharf.

Fourth of July

Let’s just get right to it: The Barracks Row/Capitol Hill Fourth of July parade is ON! You can click here for more information, though you basically just need to show up at 10 a.m. and cheer and get ready to catch some candy and beads Click here to register to march– parade organizer Isaiah Akin tells me that you can pretty much register until the day before. If you’re marching, show up by 9:15 at the corner of 8th and I SE, where the parade begins. The Executive Office of the Mayor is also asking that people register via Eventbrite— for counting purposes, maybe? Get ready to wave to all sorts of local Hill organizations– from the Capitol Hill BID Men in Blue to the Naval Lodge Number 3 to Capitol Hill Little League. I’ll be there, taking pictures and with some THIH merch on hand– say hello!

The Wharf has a VIP fireworks viewing event with Smirnoff Red White and Berry and you’re invited! For $40 per person, you can have your own special viewing perch at the top of the Dockmaster Building, as well as drink tickets, hors d’oeuvres and DJ-spun tunes. The fun starts at 7 p.m. Click here to buy tickets.

The National Archives is holding online and in-person events to celebrate the Fourth. There will be crafts, your own copy of the Declaration of Independence, Batalá Washington and Brass Connections in person, while online you can talk flag design with Betsy Ross and tune in for a special reading of the Declaration AND MORE! Click here for the in-person events and here to catch the online programming.

Incidentally, did you know that a DC Fourth of July is not the Nation’s best? According to WalletHub, ours ranks at a shocking number 8, below Seattle?! Just because DC is hotter than Hades’s butt doesn’t mean our Fourth isn’t the loudest, cheeriest, cookoutiest, Stars-and-Stripiest in the land. It’s capital, old sport!

Speaking of capital things, the Capitol Fourth concert this year the concert will be previously recorded and broadcast nationally on PBS. Click here to watch. Clearly, since the Capitol grounds are closed, performing there is not an option.

If you’ll venture out to the National Mall, here is their portal with information and access to the festivities. The National Park Service fireworks display starts at around 9:15 EDT, but the unofficial fireworks started June 15 and will keep going throughout the summer– you are warned.

For a more contemplative change of pace, you can catch an organ recital at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception, in the Great Upper Church. The concert starts at 6 p.m. More information here.
