The installation is the work of Suzanne Brennan Firstenberg, who spent two months getting the necessary permits for the installation
She is assisted by a large number of volunteers. After the space was laid out last week, over the weekend some 90% of the flags were installed
Visitors can add names to the flags to remember loved ones lost to the disease
Or they can grab a bundle of flags and plant them – six inches apart, please
It makes for a remarkable backdrop for pictures
And the squirrels are always happy to pose
Two miles away, the Statue of Freedom looks down on the installation
