The March for Life (and the littering and reckless charter buses) is coming this Thursday and Friday

I’m not going to discuss the merits or lack thereof regarding the March for Life this coming Friday, January 24th: With whichever side of this debate you happen to agree, I’m sure this humble local blog isn’t going to change your mind. But can we talk for a minute about the environmental disaster that they wreak upon our neighborhood? Idling charter buses, standing around in the winter chill for way longer than the three minutes that DC law enforces, blocking crosswalks and belching carbon monoxide for hours, as they circle around our parks. Tens of thousands of placards and signs tossed not just in the garbage but on the side of the street, covering the bricks and the pavement and clogging the sewers. Many groups come to exercise their First Amendment right in our city and, specifically, in our neighborhood, but few are as inconsiderate as this group is. This is a fact that strikes me as bitter irony every year: They want to protect unborn babies but they don’t care to be good stewards of the earth.

Anyway. Rant is over and now here is the information you need to know: The main March for Life will take place on Friday, January 24 on the National Mall, starting at about noon on 12th and Constitution, NW, and culminating at the Supreme Court from 2-5:30. However, there will be a protest outside the Supreme Court on the official anniversary of the Roe Vs. Wade decision, Wednesday, January 22, from 7-8 p.m. There will also be a protest outside Planned Parenthood, 1225 Fourth Street, NE. This protest will take place close to school drop-off time, from 9-11 a.m., so plan accordingly.

Kudos to St. Joseph’s on Capitol Hill for encouraging its volunteers to take public transportation on Friday, January 24. If you want to help with the day’s hospitality at St. Joseph’s or at St. Peter’s on Capitol Hill, click on the parish names or call 202-547-1223 (St. Joseph’s, ask for Kelly) or 202-547-1430 (St. Peter’s, ask for Molly).
