PARKing Day is a day where elfin creatures take over parking spots around town and transform them into little slices of whimsy. This year, PARKing Day will take over the streets on September 20 and you can be a part of it.
Some people grumble at the aggressively charming takeover of metered parking spots but many of us think it’s a great idea that raises awareness of the need for green space in the city. If you fall into the “charming idea” camp and have always wanted to be one of the chosen elfinkind, you can apply for your very own PARKing day spot! Just head on over to the DDOT application site, https://ddot.dc.gov/page/parking-day-dc. You, your merry band of friends, your workplace or your non-profit have until August 16 to file your permit application. Some of the fine print, from DDOT’s release is here:
PARK(ing) Day 2019 is open to anyone seeking to sponsor a seven-hour temporary park. The parks will be limited to metered parking locations without time-of-day restrictions, and should be located in the middle of blocks for safety reasons. Participants will be responsible for the cost of materials or permitting fees associated with the temporary parks and will be responsible for cleaning up the spaces after the event.
The deadline to apply for a permit is Friday, August 16, 2019. Residents and businesses are encouraged to submit their designs to DDOT for approval. DDOT will hold an information session on Thursday, July 25 at 11:00 a.m. for those interested in learning more about the application process. Contact Cynthia.firstname.lastname@example.org to RSVP.
