Have you ever dreamed of a day where bikes take over the streets and our children can ride safely to school in a velocipede utopia? That day comes every May around these parts, and it’s tomorrow, May 8, starting at 7:30 a.m.!!!!!

Bike to School Day, the yearly event put on by the Ward 6 Public School Parents Organization (formerly the Capitol Hill Public School Parents Organization) in partnership with the National Center for Safe Routes to Schools, promises to be just as fun and empowering as it’s always been. This year it may be more so than in recent years, as I’m told there will be something special in honor of Capitol Hill parent and cycling advocate Dave Salovesh.

And remember, parents: It may be a little on the early side, but there will be Zeke’s Coffee to warm you and wake you right up.

Check out the press release for more details below. You can also RSVP via this Facebook link.

On Wednesday, May 8, 2019, at 7:30 a.m., students from 16+ Ward 6 schools will gather at Lincoln Park (11th & East Capitol Streets, SE) for activities, snacks, warm up exercises, student performances, and local and national speakers – including Ward 6 Councilmember Allen and DC Deputy Mayor for Education, Paul Kihn.

Enjoy activities for kids, giveaways, light snacks, coffee and helmet safety checks. Cyclists, skaters, strollers, scooters and pedestrians are all welcome.

Bike trains depart between 8:15 and 8:20 AM ‐ we all get to school on time!

Guest speakers, performers, and sponsors will round out the Lincoln Park Bike-to-School event:

Ward 6 Councilmember Charles Allen will kick off and MC the festivities

The Eastern High School Blue and White Marching Band will perform and accompany schools East of Lincoln Park

The J.O. Wilson Elementary School Cheerleaders and the Tyler Elementary School Cheerleader and Step Team will perform

Local fitness celebrities Gabriella Boston and Kathy Pugh will warm up the crowd

Community members will join from DC Water, the DC Department of Energy and Environment, the Pedestrian and Bicycle Information Center, Story of Our Schools, and the DC State Board of Education

Local businesses will join from The Daily Rider, LimeBike, Zeke’s Coffee and Hill’s Kitchen

The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) will support safe traffic flow around the park

The Capitol Hill Community Foundation and the FIA Foundation generously support the event
