On The Hill:

DC’s own Paperhaus encompasses the DIY scene that has become so prevalent in the nation’s capital. The trio, comprised of Alex Tebeleff, Matt Dowling, and Rick Irby, released their latest record last fall. Are These The Questions We Need To Ask? combines psychedelic beats, driving guitar, classic pop influence, and lyrics driven by their commitment to community to create eight exciting tracks. Support your local artists at the Rock & Roll Hotel on June 30. Buy your tickets now.

The annual A Capitol Fourth celebration kicks off once again with a star-studded lineup featuring The Beach Boys, Jimmy Buffet, Pentatonix, Andy Grammer, Luke Combs, the National Symphony Orchestra, and more. While this extravagant event does draw a massive crowd, the fireworks, music, and fourth of July festivities only happen once a year. If you’re not up to the live show, the event will air on PBS and partner NPR stations for your convenience.

For a change of pace, bring the family out for a relaxing night at Yards Park for a free live concert and a great river view as part of the Capitol Riverfront Friday Night Concert Series. This week Jimi Smooth & HitTime take the stage. This DC-based group is known for putting on soulful, energetic shows filled with great showmanship and their so-called “get up and boogie” music. The group has previously performed at the White House, Redskins football games, Wizards basketball games, and National baseball games. The show begins at Yards Park on July 6 at 7 p.m. The event is free, family-friendly and open to the public.

Around DC:

For something a little more out of the ordinary than your usual club show, check out National Symphony Orchestra Declassified: Ben Folds Presents on June 29 at the Kennedy Center. This event features music from the orchestra, singer-songwriter Ben Folds, Jon Batiste, Kishi Bashi, and Joachim Horsley. The event offers an incredible blend of music from the 21st century and orchestral music. Your ticket includes access to free festivities such as a pre-show dance and music performance and post-show karaoke, as well as entrance to the concert hall. Visit the event website for more information and to purchase tickets.

With their 2017 release, The Yunahon Mixtape, Oso Oso revived the ’00s indie rock sound. This Long Beach-based group takes their emo and pop-punk roots and transforms them into a soft sound with lyrics touching on the fleeting nature of love and friendship. Their newest single, “gb/ol h/nf,” also known as Goodbye old love/Hello new friends, once again showcases frontman Jade Lilitri’s impeccable songwriting and vocals. Check out Oso Oso at Songbyrd on July 1. Get your tickets here.

The Nightowls are bringing funk back with a modern twist. This 10-piece group combines R&B, funk, pop, and classic soul music for a groovy sound. The band takes pride in their showmanship, choreography, and ability to both pay homage to earlier music but also pave the way for new artists in the genre. The Nightowls have performed at large festivals such as Austin City Limits and South by Southwest. Keep in mind that this show is for those 21 and older. Don’t miss The Nightowls on July 5 at Gypsy Sally’s. Buy your tickets now or at the door.
