Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s July 2015 Events

CHAW-logoSince 1972, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) has provided arts education to thousands of children and adults in the Washington region, especially from the greater Capitol Hill area. Through classes, performances, and exhibitions in visual and performing arts, CHAW brings together diverse segments of the population to connect through the transformative power of creativity.  CHAW offers a tuition assistance program and flexible payment plans. CHAW is funded in part by the DC Commission on the Arts & Humanities, an agency supported in part by the National Endowment for the Arts. CHAW is a featured charity in the 2014-2015 Catalogue for Philanthropy, mentioned as Best Venue to See on the Cheap in DCist’s 2014 Best Theater Venues in DC, the 2014 Hilly Award winner for Best Arts Organization/Venue, and the winner of 2012 Best in the City awards for “arts classes for kids” and “arts classes” in The Washington Post Express.

Wednesday, July 1 dog & pony dc Theatre Workshop: Stage Combat for the Improviser Part of dog & pony’s CAMP! Series, focused on topics of interest to DC-based artists and Fringe Festival participants. dog & pony Ringleader Lorraine Ressegger-Slone will be leading the workshop.  CAMP! is open to all interested adults, especially but not limited to those involved in the Fringe Festival, and costs $15 to attend.  For more information and to register, visitwww.chaw.org.

Friday, July 10 Friday ARTnights: Paint & Sip Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, July 10, 2015 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Receive step-by-step instruction from CHAW teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece, all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments. Friday, July 10Friday ARTnights: Friday Night Fever Disco Dance WorkshopJoin GiGi for an introductory disco dance class. Learn steps and moves performed in time to the beat of popular disco music. This class will show you all the classic moves with a modern twist. No dance experience required. Wear comfortable shoes. $25 includes a fun 2-hour dance workshop fit for all levels and a little history on the form on the side.  The workshop takes place 6:30pm-8:30pm on Friday, July 10 at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE.  For more information and to register, visit www.chaw.org.

Saturday, July 11 Gallery Show Opening: A Journey down the Potomac The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is proud to present the work of photographer Jonathan Weiner in a new solo show opening in the CHAW Gallery on Saturday, July 11, 2015. The opening will take place 5:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday, July 11th at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE, and is free and open to the public.  Where does this great river begin?
Where does it end? And what lies in-between?  Local artist and teacher Jonathan Weiner presents a selection of photographs that explore the length of the Potomac River, from its humble origin in the Appalachian Mountains, through our nation’s capital, to the River’s grand joining with the Chesapeake Bay.  The color photographs are printed from traditional slide film and have been selected from a larger body of work that took over three years to create.  General gallery hours are: 9:30 am–9:00 pm (M-Th), 9:30 am–6:00 pm (F), and 9:00 am–2:00 pm (Sat). Gallery is free and open to the public.  “A Journey down the Potomac” will run July 11-August 15 in the Gallery. Fridays, July 17 & 24Friday ARTnights: Drop-In Figure Drawing The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Friday, July 17 and 24, 2015 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Friday, July 17 Friday ARTnights: Clay & Cabernet – Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Painting Clay & Sipping Cabernet, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of clay tile painting and wine sipping on Friday, July 17, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th St., SE.  In this workshop, teaching artist Clay Hollenkamp will introduce attendees to the frisket technique–using stencils and paint on clay tiles–in a relaxed and fun happy hour atmosphere. $40 includes all materials and refreshments.  Tickets available through our event page on www.chaw.org, or by calling CHAW at202-547-5839.

Thursday-Saturday, July 30-August 1 & August 6-8CHAW Presents Gilbert & Sullivan’s “Trial by Jury” and selections from “The Yeoman of the Guard” – CHAW’s annual summer of Gilbert & Sullivan is back in full–and, as always, slightly twisted–form!  Join us for an evening or afternoon of song, wordplay, and fun.  Performances take place in the accolade-winning Black Box Theatre at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE, at 7:30pm with 3pmmatinees on Saturdays, August 1 & 8.  Tickets are $20 and may be purchased by calling CHAW at 202-547-6839, or by emailing Brian Washington at bwashington@chaw.org.
