Friday, May 1 & Saturday, May 2 STENCILS & STREET ART FOR ADULTS – Join teaching artist Kate DeCiccio in a two-day workshop exploring the art of stenciling and its urban applications.  Learn the process of stencils as well as the techniques various street artists use to create tongue-in-cheek messages and subversive social commentary by putting art in unlikely places. Class 1 will focus on positive & negative stencils and stacking to create patterns & simple images. Class 2 will be about large-scale stencil techniques, text & more complex cutting styles. You’ll collectively create a beautiful panel to be displayed at CHAW & make posters to bring home. Both days will include spray painting, because let’s be honest: that’s the most fun part!  Classes take place on Friday, May 1 from 6:30pm to 9:30pmand Saturday, May 2 from 3pm to 6pm at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE, Washington, DC 20003.  Cost is $125 and includes both days and all materials; adults of all experience levels welcome.  For more information and to register, visit www.chaw.org, or call (202) 547-6839.

Saturday, May 2THEATRE OPENING – Taffety Punk Theatre Company Presents Hamlet, Q1. The so-called “bad quarto,” or first printing of Hamlet, has mystified scholars for hundreds of years. It’s half as long and far less poetic than the “normal” Hamlet. Competing theories speculate that it may be a touring script or an early draft that was never meant for printing. One theory maintains that it is a pirated version of Hamlet—a very poorly pirated version. The brevity and—admittedly—peculiar language of this version jar both actors and audience from the comfort of the play they know so well, which means it’s the perfect opportunity to reconsider what Hamlet is.

The show will be held at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE.

Show dates are as follows:

Pay-what-you-can previews on Thursday, April 30 & Friday, May 1 at 7:30 pm.
