Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s August 2016 Events

CHAW-logoFridays, August 5 & 19 – Friday ARTnights: Drop-In Figure Drawing – The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Fridays, August 5 & August 19, 2016 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Fridays, August 5 & 19 – Friday ARTnights: Knit & Sip –After the hustle and bustle of a long week relax, reconnect with your friends and like-minded knitters, in a fun, neighborly environment. Enjoy light refreshments, coffee, tea and wine. Bring your own project or purchase a kit from the instructor to learn the basics. All experience levels welcome. The workshop takes place 7:00pm-9:00pm on Fridays, August 5 & August 19 at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE.  $30 per session + optional $10 for starter ball of yarn and knitting needles. Friday, August 6 – Paint Bucket Campaign Fundraiser: An Enchanted CHAW Evening of Song with Delia Zeilinski – Performance at 8pm at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop; tickets $20 and may be purchased online or by calling CHAW at 202-547-6839. Delia will perform art songs, operatic arias and musical theatre (see the program online: https://www.razoo.com/us/story/An-Enchanted-Chaw-Evening-Of-Song). A very important part of CHAW’s mission is ensuring that everyone in the community has access to art programs, no matter their financial circumstances. CHAW has never turned a child away for inability to pay for an art class. Support this mission – and enjoy a wonderful musical evening—at this fundraiser to benefit the annual Paint Bucket Campaign for tuition assistance. Your contribution is 100% tax deductible. Thursday, August 11 – Sunday, August 14 – World Premiere Theatre Performance – Alice Adams – Join CHAW for a world premiere event: Alice Adams, a musical in progress composed by Julliard-trained Bob Convery.

The workshop performances will be held in the accolade-winning black box theatre at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE (just two blocks south of the Eastern Market metro on the orange/blue/silver lines), as well as in the Lab II Theatre at the Atlas Performing Arts Center, 1333 H St. NE.

Workshop performance dates are as follows:

  • 7:30pm on Thursday, August 11 & Friday, August 12 at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop
  • 7:30pm on Saturday, August 13 at Atlas Performing Arts Center, Lab II Theatre
  • Matinees will be held Saturday, August 13 at 2:00pm at the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop and Sunday, August 14 at 4:00pm at Atlas Performing Arts Center, Lab II Theatre

More information: Robert Convery, composer, is known for his stunning cantata, “Songs of Children,” based on the writings of the children of the Holocaust and performed at the opening of The U.S. Holocaust Museum in 1983. There will be a post-performance feedback/discussion with the composer after the August 11th performance, with possible additional sessions at other performances. Convery has adapted Booth Tarkington’s novel,Alice Adams, the 1921 Pulitzer Prize Novel. Convery’s adaptation includes 15 characters and 21 original songs.  Brittany Baratz, who has appeared in numerous musicals, including at the Kennedy Center and Olney Theater Center, will appear as Alice Adams.

Friday, August 12 – Friday ARTnights: Paint & Sip – Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s popular Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, August 12, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Receive step-by-step instruction from CHAW teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece, all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments. Please call CHAW at (202) 547-6839 to register. Friday, August 12 – Friday ARTnights: Grooving with GiGi – Hip Hop – Born from the concrete jungles of NYC and LA, you will learn old school and new school hip hop moves. The workshop takes place at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE, 6:30pm-8:30pm on Friday, August 12. Registration is $25; contact CHAW at 202-547-6839 to register.

Friday, August 26 – Friday ARTnights: Crafts & Craft Beer – Join teaching artist Clay Hollenkamp for an evening of crafting, community, and craft beer with DC Brau brews while you work on projects that allow you to unwind, engage your creativity, and enjoy artful conversations with friends old and new.  No experience is necessary. Monday, August 29 – Fall Classes Begin for CHAW Youth Arts Program – Join CHAW this fall for your daily dose of Confidence, Creativity, and Community!  Our unique afterschool youth arts program blends skill-building, technique, and artistic integrity with a warm, diverse, community-minded environment that encourages students to take creative risks and develop both artistically and personally.  To learn more and register, visitwww.chaw.org or call 202-547-6839.
