To Do: Weekend of July 5th -8th

The Dakshini South Asian Dancei Festival returns to the Atlas this weekend. Photo courtesy of the Atlas.

You guys, apologies for the lateness of this week’s To Do. The mid-week holiday has completely thrown me and I have not really know what day it was all week. But it is still Thursday and the weekend is happening! How to celebrate?

It feels slightly less like the face of the sun so maybe ease into the weekend by taking in the Nationals-Marlins games. Things are not going well for our beloved Nats, but maybe hosting the All Star game will help them turn things around?

Friday is another opportunity to watch a movie from the comfort of your car at the Union Market Drive. This month’s offering is Like Water for Chocolate, one of the very sexy food movies from the 90s. It’s a gorgeous film and you should go. You don’t even need a car! Walk-ins are free and each car is $10. The lot will close at 8:30 p.m. and the film begins at 8:55. Book your car ticket here.

This is your last weekend to catch the Smithsonian Folklife Festival, so put on your walking shoes and head to the mall for learning and amazement!

The free concert at Yards Park this week features the Jimi Smooth band. The concert begins at 6:30 p.m. and you are encouraged to bring friends, a picnic and NO booze.

Saturday is another volunteer clean-up event. Volunteers report to one of seven sponsor sites and pick up trash for an hour. Bags and sanitary gloves provided. Let them know you are coming and by sending an email to  to CleanCapHill@gmail.com.

The meeting locations are:
– Atlas Vets 1326 H St NE
– Congressional Cemetery 1801 E St SE
– The Pretzel Bakery 257 15th St SE
– Fulcrum Properties Group 1328 G St SE
– Trusty’s restaurant/bar 1420 Pennsylvania Ave SE
– Capital Candy Jar 201 15th St NE

That evening the Atlas Performing Arts Center hosts Dakshina: Festival of South Asian Dance once again. Madhavi Mudgal, Mesma Belsare, Nadhi Tekkek, Taniya and Puneet Panda will showcase their interpretation of classical Indian dance forms. The performance is at 7:30 p.m. or 5 p.m. Sunday. Tickets are $20-$35.

Sunday, “wine” down the weekend at a show at City Winery. The Aztec Two step specialize in classic harmony focused songs by the likes of Simon and Garfunkel and the Everly Brothers. Tickets are $25-$38 and the show begins at 8 p.m.
