CHAW-logoThe Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) presents the following events in March 2016:

Fridays, March 4 & 18Friday ARTnights: Knit & SipAfter the hustle and bustle of a long week relax, reconnect with your friends and like-minded knitters, in a fun, neighborly environment. Enjoy light refreshments, coffee, tea and wine. Bring your own project or purchase a kit from the instructor to learn the basics. All experience levels welcome. The workshop takes place 7:00pm-9:00pm on Fridays, March 4 and March 18 at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE.  $30 per session + optional $10 for starter ball of yarn and knitting needles. Friday, March 4 Friday ARTnights: Paint & Sip Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s popular Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, March 4, 2016 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Receive step-by-step instruction from CHAW teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece, all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments.Please call CHAW at (202) 547-6839 to register. Saturday, March 5 Gallery Show Opening: CHAL Presents “Appetite for Art” The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW), in partnership with CHAMPS, the Capitol Hill Chamber of Commerce, is proud to present Capitol Hill Art League’s annual open-call juried exhibit, “Appetite for Art.” The opening will take place 5:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday, March 5th at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE, and is free and open to the public. The jurors, Deirdre Ehlen MacWilliams (public art expert) and Stephen Cheung (local restaurateur), will speak at 5:30pm and present awards to the prize-winning artists. General gallery hours are: 9:30 am–9:00 pm (M-Th), 9:30 am–6:00 pm (F), and 9:00 am–2:00 pm (Sat). Gallery is free and open to the public.  The exhibit will run March 5 through April 15 in the Gallery. Wednesday, March 9 & Monday, March 14 Auditions: Principal Role in Alice Adams “Alice Adams” is a new musical in progress by Composer Robert Convery, which will be workshopped and performed during July and August 2016. We are seeking Sopranos with good low range to audition for the Principal role of Alice Adams. The selected singer should be able to begin solo rehearsals in May. There is an honorarium for the role.  Auditions will be held Wednesday, March 9 and Monday, March 14 from 7:30pm to 9:30pm At Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545, 7th Street, SE
(corner of 7th and G Streets, SE, near Eastern Market Metro). Please bring a copy of your music for the accompanist.

Fridays, March 11 & 18Friday ARTnights: Drop-In Figure Drawing The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Fridays, March 11, 2016 and March 18, 2016 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Friday, March 11Friday ARTnights: Grooving with GiGiHave you ever been a curious kitten about the art of burlesque? Unleash that inner tiger with CHAW’s burlesque workshop. Come to this two-hour class and learn a sassy routine that will leave you with a wiggle and wink you never knew you had. There is no dance experience needed and no nudity involved. The class is part lecture and part movement. Guests will not only perform beginner burlesque dance moves, but also learn about the history of burlesque and the dancers who still perform the art to this day. The workshop takes place at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE, 6:30pm-8:30pm on Friday, March 11.  Registration is $25; contact CHAW at 202-547-6839to register.

Saturday, March 12 & Saturday, April 16 – Arts Educators’ Professional Development Workshop Series All arts educators are invited to participate in this two-part workshop led by Kate DeCiccio, CHAW teaching artist, who brings a wealth of experience in curriculum development and creative strategies in a variety of environments for teaching artists. These workshops are hands-on with art-making activities and discussions that will reveal new perspectives in how we approach teaching and art as a way of life. This is a really exciting opportunity to engage more deeply with our roles as teachers, artists, and how they can be brought together to make us even more effective in the classroom.  The workshops will be held in two parts, both at Capitol Hill Arts Workshop, 545 7th St. SE:

Why Do We Teach? (part I)Saturday, March 12, 10am – 2pm: How we can successfully streamline the passion for our own art-making into our teaching practice & vice versa. Strategies for Creative Problem Solving & Critical Thinking (part II) – Saturday, April 16, 10am – 2pm: Focus on ways to apply Creative Strategies to lesson plans and hook young learners into art and artful thinking. This training will help you develop engaging  “problems” and scaffolding to aid students in discovering individual creative solutions.

Friday, March 25Friday ARTnights: Crafts & Craft Beer Join teaching artist Cherie Lester for an evening of crafting, community, and craft beer while you work on projects that allow you to unwind, engage your creativity, and enjoy artful conversations with friends old and new.  No experience is necessary. Drawing II

Tuesdays, March 22-April 26, 6:30pm-8:30pm. Cost: $240 for 6 weeks. Contact CHAW at 202-547-6839 or visit the website atwww.chaw.org to register.

Build on fundamental concepts of drawing and 2-D media. Creative assignments include portrait, landscape and still- life. Realism and abstraction are encouraged as well as individual experimentation with different drawing media and techniques.

Introduction to Drawing

Learn fundamental concepts of drawing and 2D media. Foundational elements are reinforced through varied techniques, materials, experimentation, theory and examples in art history.
