Friday, January 8 –Friday ARTnights: Paint & Sip – Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s popular Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, January 8, 2015 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Receive step-by-step instruction from CHAW teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece, all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments. Friday, January 15 – Friday ARTnights: Drop-In Figure Drawing – The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Friday, January 15, 2015 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Friday, January 15 – Friday ARTnights: Knit & Sip –After the hustle and bustle of a long week relax, reconnect with your friends and like-minded knitters, in a fun, neighborly environment. Enjoy light refreshments, coffee, tea and wine. Bring your own project or purchase a kit from the instructor to learn the basics. All experience levels welcome. The workshop takes place 7:00pm-9:00pm on Friday, January 15 at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE. $30 per session + optional $10 for starter ball of yarn and knitting needles. Saturday, January 16 – Gallery Show Opening: Bulfinch: Memories and Fairytales – When novelist Hannah Sternberg found an old, marked-up manuscript of her second novel, Bulfinch, in a drawer, she couldn’t bring herself to throw it away. Instead, she sent pieces of it to artists all over the world, challenging them to transform the pages into a wide array of multimedia works exploring the themes of memory and revision. Featuring works from professional and amateur artists from as far away as Los Angeles, the Netherlands, and beyond, as well as a strong representation of local DC artists, “Bulfinch: Memories and Fairytales” is a unique and whimsical look at the nexus between storytelling and the visual arts. You won’t want to miss this one-of-a-kind exhibition; Opening Reception 5:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday, January 16 at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE. Tuesday, January 19 – Concert: Remembrance of Martin Luther King, Jr. – The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is pleased to present this performance featuring two DC-area social justice-focused a cappella groups, SongRise and Not What You Think, in a free concert in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The concert will take place 7pm-8pm onTuesday, January 19 at the Anacostia Playhouse, 2020 Shannon Place NE, and is free and open to the public. Friday, January 22 – Friday ARTnights: Crafts & Craft Beer – Join teaching artist Cherie Lester for an evening of crafting, community, and craft beer while you work on projects that allow you to unwind, engage your creativity, and enjoy artful conversations with friends old and new. The opening will take place 5:00pm-7:00pm on Saturday, January 23rd at CHAW, 545 7th St. SE, and is free and open to the public. Friday, January 29 – Performance: We Happy Few Productions presents “Iphigenia” – The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is pleased to collaborate with new theatre partners, We Happy Few Productions, for this one-night-only staged reading of Racine’s “Iphigenia.” We Happy Few presents stripped down, small cast, ensemble productions to provide unique perspectives on classic texts.
