Capitol Hill Arts Workshop’s June 2015 Events

CHAW-logoMay 8, 2015–The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) presents the following events in June 2015:

Thursday, June 4 SOLO GALLERY SHOW OPENING: RINDY OBRIENS BACK TO THE GARDEN The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) is proud to present the work of Capitol Hill Art League’s Rindy O’Brien in a new solo show opening in the CHAW Gallery on Thursday, June 4, 2015.  The show includes photographs depicting gardens as well as handmade frames with pressed flowers from the Himalayan Cottage Industry.  The opening will take place 6:30pm-8:30pm on Thursday, June 4that CHAW, 545 7th St. SE, and is free and open to the public.  General gallery hours are: 9:30 am–9:00 pm (M-Th), 9:30 am–6:00 pm (F), and 9:00 am–2:00 pm (Sat). Gallery is free and open to the public.  “Back to the Garden” will run June 1-June 17 in the Gallery. Fridays, June 5 & 19DROP-IN FIGURE DRAWING The Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) hosts a drop-in “Working from the Figure” session on Friday, June 5 and 19, 2015 from 6:30-9:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Work on drawings or paintings in front of a live model in a session without formal instruction, facilitated by artist Will Fleishell. Please bring your own drawing materials. Easels are available. Friday, June 12 Friday ARTnights: PAINT & SIP Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Paint and Sip, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of painting and wine on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Receive step-by-step instruction from CHAW teaching artists Ellen Cornett and Sheppard Bear as you create your own masterpiece, all while enjoying snacks and wine. $30 includes all materials and refreshments. Friday, June 12 Friday ARTnights: ART & HISTORY OF BURLESQUE DANCE WORKSHOPJoin the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for The Art & History of Burlesque, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of fierce posing and fabulous friends on Friday, June 12, 2015 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th Street, SE. Learn the history of this art form and get some practice working it with CHAW teaching artist GiGi Holliday. $25, adults only; heels optional. Saturday, June 13 CHAW PERFORMANCE FESTIVAL, WRITING DAY & ADULT STUDENT SHOW OPENING Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for a full day of performances, exhibits, and workshops that encompass the depth and breadth of our artistic offerings and showcase the creative minds of our community members.  From youth arts program performances to an adult food-writing workshop, a concert from KIPP students in our string residency program, an adult student show opening reception, and much more, everyone will find some way to connect creatively at the Festival.  FREE and open to the public.  A detailed schedule will be available in early June on our website, www.chaw.org, or by calling CHAW at 202-547-6839.

Friday, June 19 Friday ARTnights: CLAY & CABERNET – Join the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) for Painting Clay & Sipping Cabernet, part of CHAW’s new Friday ARTnights program, for an evening of clay tile painting and wine sipping onFriday, June 19, 2015 from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at CHAW, 545 7th St., SE.  In this workshop, teaching artist Clay Hollenkamp will introduce attendees to the frisket technique–using stencils and paint on clay tiles–in a relaxed and fun happy hour atmosphere. $40 includes all materials and refreshments.  Tickets available through our event page on www.chaw.org, or by calling CHAW at202-547-5839.

Monday, June 22OPENING DAY OF CHAW SUMMER CAMP– CHAW Summer for PreK-High School students runs June 22-August 31.  Detailed programming information, prices, and registration forms may be found on our CHAW summer website,http://chaw.org/index.php/register/chaw_summer/, or by calling CHAW at 202-547-6839.  Camps run throughout the summer with 1-, 2-, and 3-week options and prices range from $225 to $1200.  Tuition assistance and before- and after-care available.

There are four different age groups for CHAW Summer:

  1. Pre-K Adventure Camps: cultural arts and dance camps in a fun and nurturing environment
  2. Grades K-4 Arts Explorers: cultural arts, ceramics, photography, dance, and music camps that balance friends, fun, and creativity through folk and fine art traditions.
  3. Grades 5-8 Arts Intensives: Ceramics, multimedia, fashion design, and public & installation art provide the avenues for middle schoolers to stretch their creative voices and experiment more deeply with artistic methods.
  4. Grades 8-12 Arts Institutes: highly specialized and professional experiences in theatre (with Taffety Punk) and photography (with the Arlington Arts Center) allow high schoolers to engage intensively with the arts and step further into the adult world while maintaining a fun and supportive environment.

Private music and adult classes/workshops may be found on our website, chaw.org, and run throughout the summer.

Since 1972, the Capitol Hill Arts Workshop (CHAW) has provided arts education to thousands of children and adults in the Washington region, especially from the greater Capitol Hill area. CHAW was named one of DC’s top nonprofits for 2014-2015 by the Catalogue for Philanthropy, and also received recognition in DCist as “Best Venue to See on the Cheap” in its review of the Best Theater Venues in DC in 2014.
