Family Biking Matters: Halloween Ride Recap

My family had several mechanical issues with our bikes on Saturday and weren’t able to make it out to what would have been our first Hill Family Biking Halloween Ride (bummer!) How did it go? ––Almost Ride Attendee

Dear Almost,
We’re so sorry to hear you missed out on the fun. The 3rd annual Hill Family Biking Halloween Ride and Costume Contest was a fantastic event, full of spooky spirit and community joy. A picture is worth a thousand words. Instead of telling you about the ride, I’ll show you!

Over 400 participants gathered at Lincoln Park to start the festivities…

and did a full lap around the park with many neighbors spontaneously cheering turning the start into a parade!

There were many highlights along the 4-mile slow ride and our ride marshals made sure everyone stayed safe,

And no one was left behind.

So everyone could ride to “infinity and beyond!”

The ride culminated at Eastern Market Metro Plaza, where an afterparty awaited everyone. The atmosphere was lively with live music from the Knox Engler Band

and participants enjoyed special Halloween baked treats from Bread Par Avion.

And then it was time to get down to business: the costume contest. Special guest judge and Kidical Mass Arlington founder and all around awesome person Gillian Burgess led the proceedings, the witch shown here leading the ride!

All told there were winners in 11 categories that went home with $50 gift cards to The Daily Rider thanks to our event sponsor, the Jeanne Phil Meg Team. Here were a few of my personal favorites:

The Lantern Fly Bike for Best-Decorated Bike.

The “cast of Moana” set sail for adventure and came back with Best Movie-themed costume.

A Popemobile in DC? That’s right! The Holy Rollers rolled in and grabbed the Best Transportation-themed costume.

And Cap’n Crunch gave everyone a good chuckle winning Funniest costume.

It was truly a sight to behold and a wonderful way to celebrate Halloween with friends and neighbors. We hope you can join us next year and don’t forget that Hill Family Biking rides 12 months out of the year, so there’s always another ride!
