It’s been one year since some people voted in our current President and, woof, what a year it’s been. There were protests scheduled for today, to commemorate the anniversary. Washingtonian has a little more information on today’s First Amendment activities. Check out a stunning photo from today by Roll Call’s Heard on the Hill.

Building these days is complicated, which is why this project in the 1300 block of H Street NE has been basically put on hold for two years. Urban Turf

Interestingly, however, there is a project going through in the 1400 block of H Street NE and there is very little information about it. An eagle-eyed reader sent us this photo (above) of the construction zone, which is slated for demolition. The developer is 57th Street Mews Inc., which also developed La Demuren Vie on Bladensburg Road NE. and which has a bit of a history with other developments in the area (Curbed DC) and other parts of town (ANC3G) .
Another interesting thing that came into my mailbox is a continuation of the Compass Coffee saga. You may remember that co-founders Harrison Suarez and Michael Haft came up with the concept after a heartwarming story of being Marines and brothers in arms against bad coffee. Well, earlier this year, Suarez sued Haft and Haft’s father because of racketeering and corruption allegations, stemming from the fact that Haft and dad misrepresented just how much of Compass Suarez owned, pocketed COVID relief money and invested in Bitcoin without telling Suarez that’s where the money was going. Washingtonian has some of the details. It looks like DC District Court Judge Sparkle Sooknanan, who is presiding over the case, issued a ruling allowing most of the claims –including the RICO stuff!– to proceed to the discovery phase. You can read the judge’s opinion here. Discovery is sure to be even more interesting.
After having all my Instagram accounts suspended for a second time (work for Meta? Help me?) I can attest to the fact that when things are quieter, you sleep better and your brain feels more relaxed. Rock Harper’s new bar, Hush Harbor, sounds like the kind of place to go with my new, Instagram-less self. But it’s also a place for community. Eater DC
But we won’t be getting there via Streetcar past March 31, 2026. Dear, sweet #ChooChoo7, we hardly knew ye. You jingled your bell for ten tumultuous years where everyone decided you were to be hated instead of appreciated, nurtured and expanded. What a thorough lack of vision, my goodness. DC News Now
In good District news, Safe Passage will keep getting funded so trusted adult ambassadors can help kids get safely to school. WTOP

Looks like the Halloween shenanigans in Navy Yard, where a fight broke out at the park bordered by First and M Streets SE, have ended up ––predictably–– in a curfew for the area south of the highway, 8th Street SE, north of the Anacostia and east of South Capitol Street. There will be more areas, namely along the U Street corridor and other youth hotspots. More info over at Fox-5. Not to be a Negative Nancy here, but the only real effect these curfews will have is to appease Republicans and Mayor Bowser. Other than that, kids will go crazy right up until curfew time, for one. Also, the curfew assumes all kids will go straight home, which seems to ignore the possibility that they might go where there is no curfew and do their shenanigans there. But sure–– curfews.
Little District is a little bigger these days: the LGBTQ+ focused bookstore has moved to a bigger space on Pennsylvania Avenue SE, just a few doors down from East City and Labyrinth. Washington City Paper

I need to go get hot dogs from the guy who claims toppings other than mustard and sauerkraut because I assume his parents didn’t hug him enough. I kid, I kid. Read more about his operation via Business Insider.
Del. Eleanor Holmes Norton was scammed at home and the policeman who helped her decided to diagnose her on the spot with dementia. Dang, when did MPD start including free medical advice with their reports? NBC-4
