To Do:

The To Do List: Week of November 1, 2024

Some say that the last day of October and the first days of November are a special window to connect with those who have lived and gone before us. How will you celebrate these special days with a tenuous connection to the beyond?

Start by eating ice cream! The newest Van Leeuwen store is opening at 600 Pennsylvania Avenue SE, in the former Captain Cookie spot, next door to Peregrine Espresso. The first 100 patrons in today at 3 p.m. will get a tote, and from 3-5 p.m. you can get $1 ice cream! Also, FYI: Capitol employees get a 15% discount with a Congressional ID Badge. Our Marine Barracks neighbors also get a 15% discount with a Military ID.

The Wharf would like to remind you that it’s been crushing celebration after celebration and the merriment is FREE. Dia de Muertos is no different: from 4 to 7 pm on November 2, enjoy a special fiesta with dancing, lanterns, delicious food and more. Click here for more info and to RSVP.

And Wunder Garten is holding their Absolute ABBA disco on that night! Appreciate the harmonies, don your best bell bottoms and celebrate those four beautiful Swedes who gave us the gift of disco. More info and rsvp here.

Looking to meet people or make a connection? The Northeast Library hosts a conversation group on Mondays, from 10-11 am. Coffee will be provided. For more info, click here.

The Art of Care is Mosaic’s newest play, about the difficult work of caretakers in our community and lives. Mosaic Theater operates out of Atlas Performing Arts Center on 13th and H NE. Learn more about the production here and get tickets here.

A play about a werewolf in the middle of Congressional Cemetery?! YES PLEASE!!! Lykos Anthropos runs through November 24 and you can get tickets here. Make sure you are prepared to walk in the dark and bring a folding chair or a sturdy picnic blanket because the play runs 75 minutes with no intermission. May we also recommend you bring a fully charged phone so you can use your flashlight, just in case?

Yeah, we’re having an election and you can vote anywhere. But where should you go to watch the election results and bite your nails to the quick? You can go to Union Pub and, starting at 11 a.m., you can get all sorts of fun specials plus the 270 challenge, starting at 5 p.m. What’s the 270 challenge? Click here to find out.

Or! You can go to the Tune Inn and watch from the oldest bar on Capitol Hill. Reserve your booth by emailing stephtunneinn@gmail.com or click here for more info.

Reminder: Lincoln Park will be closed through the end of November. From NPS: “Starting October 9, the north playground in Lincoln Park will be closed for maintenance. The National Park Service will replace the retaining wall, replace the gate latches, and complete other minor repairs such as power washing the playground equipment and touching up paint.” Updates can be found on NPS’s  website.

Also on November 2, Framebridge is celebrating 10 years by opening their 29th store! Stop by their newest Georgetown shop on November 2 & 3, 11 a.m. to 7 p.m at 1506 Wisconsin Ave NW (just steps from Framebridge’s original offices!). Stop by and score local treats, see local artists like Cris Clapp Logan and more!

Get wined and dined for a good cause! The MedStar Health and Four Seasons DC Wine and Dine Event is a tasty and star-studded showcase and benefit. Friday’s dinner is sold out, but get tickets for Thursday, November 14th’s passed hors d’oeuvres event. More info and tickets here.

PLAN AHEAD

November is for remembrance and poetry: The Hill Center will be hosting Profs and Pints on November 14 for Poets of the First World War. Learn about the chroniclers of a war that changed the world through its carnage and technological advances. Tickets and more info here.

Are you a caretaker for someone who is struggling with Alzheimer’s? The Voices Festival Production’s Community Care Roundtable on November 19 will examine how the tools of art-making can offer new paradigms in addressing issues of social invisibility, neglect, bureaucratic dehumanization, and familial strife often experienced during the throes of caregiving. There will also be a free reading of The Caregiver Interview Project on November 17 and 18. Want more information? Click here. Tickets here.

Psst… do you love the holidays? Then make plans to enjoy them at the Hillwood Estate, starting November 26. More info here.
