Even though we are eating all the things, we’re channeling these buff, healthy bodies at @reformationfitness because maybe 2024 is the year we try Pilates seriously. Thank you for tagging #thehillishome!

December is in full swing and we hope you’re spending your money as much as possible on local shops and artists. There will be a Night Market inside and outside Eastern Market on December 15, from 5-9 p.m., which will be a lot of fun. Make sure it’s on your calendar!

This week we won’t be sharing any stories from the Washington Post, as we believe that journalists who choose to keep people informed full-time––often risking their lives in the process–– deserve to be paid a fair wage. Let me tell you: doing THIH on a very-part time basis is stressful enough, especially when random trolls think we should be doing or saying this or that. Can’t imagine taking that pressure or abuse full time without proper compensation. If you want to support the strike effort, click here to learn more and to write to management.

Onward!

Metrobus service has introduced 24/7 bus service on 14 key routes all over town. The service starts December 17. There will also be courtesy stops, where drivers will let passengers off at places closer to where they are going than their traditional bus stop. More information here.

But it begs the question: If places like restaurants are spending so much in heightened security, as Axios reports, will there be enough people riding the bus in the middle of the night? The Axios report left us with plenty of questions. The saddest fact is that many restaurants had to start hiring security to enforce COVID rules in the first place and then kept them on due to increased crime– so we won’t see the end of the pandemic’s effects for a long time.

Remember the FBI agent who was carjacked a block away from Maury Elementary a couple weeks ago? Yep, he was carjacked by a teen, Devonta Lynch, who’s been arrested and is being charged as an adult. NBC Washington

Recently, a Florida-licensed car crashed into the barricades at the Rayburn House Office building. The Daily Mirror summarizes the odd incident, which apparently was not a carjacking.

By the way, the Metropolitan Police Department has an excellent, if chilling, Carjacking Dashboard. It has YTD totals, breakdown by arrestee and an entire section on how to avoid this violent crime of opportunity. Yes, there are teens and tweens with no real sense of right or wrong who are trying to either go for a joyride or make a quick buck and who know they are not at risk of prosecution as much as adults; but please, we beg you to lock your doors and not leave your car running unless it’s absolutely necessary.

If you read this article on Breitbart without additional context (or, honestly, even within context), it’s easy to draw the conclusion that the author thinks crime is newsworthy only when it happens to newsworthy people. His claim that the District defunded the police is also misleading, as police budget has remained flat and according to the DC Fiscal Policy Institute, MPD regularly overspends well beyond its budget every year.
But you know– if there is something the internet has taught me over and over all these years is that ACKCHYUALLY… well, you can imagine the rest.

Should the District repair gas lines or should we as a community move away from natural gas? ANC 6A discussed this particular objection at a recent ANC meeting. Hill Rag

Mah-Ze-Dahr in Navy Yard is permanently closed (PoPVille). We will miss your delicious, flaky croissants and stupidly chocolatey cookies– gone too soon. Looks like we’ll be trekking out to Georgetown for a fix.

By the way, the Brickies happened last night and it was a lovely reminder that our community and the people in it are just the best. You can see the complete list of winners here. And if you caught the live ceremony, you may have seen a spunky lady announcing Hill Family Biking’s award. No autographs, please!
