- New H Street Unit Arrests Serial Package Thief
Officers from the Metropolitan Police Department’s New H Street Bike Unit arrested a man for stealing multiple packages on Saturday, September 16, 2023, in the 600 block of G Street, Northeast.
At approximately 2:17 p.m., officers of the First District’s new H Street Unit were actively patrolling the H Street corridor when they were flagged down for a theft in progress. They learned that a suspect had stolen multiple packages in the 600 block of G Street, Northeast, before fleeing.
Through exceptional teamwork and a thorough knowledge of the H Street corridor, the officers of the H Street Unit quickly located the man and recovered all of the stolen packages. 41-year-old Daniel Lazarus Greene, of no fixed address, was arrested and charged with Theft II.
The new H Street Unit was established to support residents and businesses, enforce criminal violations, and enhance public safety in the H Street corridor. “We have already received many compliments about their work from the public,” First District Commander Colin Hall shared.
MPD would like to remind residents to take precautions when having packages delivered to their home. When possible, bring packages in as soon as they arrive. If you are out, ask a family member or trusted neighbor to hold on to your delivery until you get back.

- MPD Investigating Death of Man in 2022
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Homicide Branch are investigating the death of a man after a fight in Southeast D.C in 2022.
On Friday, November 4, 2022, homicide detectives responded to a local hospital for the report of a man’s death. Detectives learned that the man was being treated for injuries sustained during a fight in the 1100 block of K Street, Southeast on October 14, 2022. Later, the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner conducted an autopsy and ruled the manner of death a homicide.
During the initial investigation, an arrest was made for the assault. Detectives are working with the U.S. Attorney’s Office to upgrade the charges to reflect the death.
The victim has been identified as 61-year-old Thomas Gray, of Southeast, DC.
- Woman Dead After Being Struck by Vehicle in Northeast, DC
Detectives from the Metropolitan Police Department’s Major Crash Unit are investigating a traffic fatality that killed a woman in Northeast, DC.
The preliminary investigation revealed that on Tuesday, September 26, 2023, at approximately 10:07 p.m., a woman was crossing the road on 17th Street, Northeast, at Lang Place, Northeast. The woman was struck by an unknown dark colored vehicle that was travelling northbound on 17th Street, Northeast. The vehicle fled the scene before officers arrived on scene.
The pedestrian was in the area of the south crosswalk.
The woman was transported to a local hospital where she died.
The decedent’s identity is being withheld pending next of kin notification.
